Education II Lesson Plan

Lesson: Bullies or buddies

Date: 5/6/15
Subject: Interaction/ Social Studies
Topic: Bullying
The Students:
What do you know about the students in your classroom (demographics, special needs,
interests)
There is a lot of teasing and bullying that is covered up in this classroom. The students
are almost all friends but there are still cases of intervention between a few students. There are
also some others who have little qualities that would be a flash to be a reason to bully. While
these specific students dont tease about these qualities, I thought it would be a good idea to
introduce that it isn't appropriate to tease a student because they are different then the bully.

The Unit:
Where does this lesson fit within the current unit? What connects will students need to
make from prior learning? What will students need to take away from this lesson to
make connections in the future?
The current unit is fairy tale and we connected this lesson by introducing bullies from
disney movies. The students know that in Cinderella, the stepsisters and mother tease and bully
Cinderella. The students will definitely need to learn that it is not appropriate or nice to tease or
bully. That there is no reason to be a bully and then how to respond to being bullied.

The Objective(s) or Target(s):

What will the students be able to accomplish? What standards will be met?
The student will be able to know what to do when they are being bullied, what
qualifies as a bully or act of a bully, and how to know if they are being a bully.
Anticipatory Set:
What will you do to gain students attention? How does this connect to the lesson?
I will have a bunch of different mini activities available to do. These include: crumpling up
a sheet of paper to demonstrate not being able to undo bullying, happy words smiley face to
demonstrate how positive words make you feel better, what a bully or buddy does rain drop half
circles- each student writes something that a bully would say or do and on another rain drop half
circle, they would write something that a buddy would say or do (this then went on the bulletin
board). Lastly, the students each got a colored note card and they each wrote a letter to the
teachers ( myself and mrs.M) and while some of them didn't actually want to do this or didn't
have a story, there were more than half of the given out note cards that were filled with a very
saddening story about being bullied.

Lesson Strategies:
What learning strategies will be implemented within your lesson (Teach Like a
Champion).
We will have the students do a lot of communication verbally to understand the lesson.
Because bullying is all about actions and words, having them speak out loud about each factor
will help us identify if they understood the lesson.
Closure and/or Assessment:
How will students be assessed at the end of the lesson? How will you wrap up the
lesson to know your students understand?
There wasnt a formal assessment that the students completed at the end of the lesson,
however a lot of the verbal activities really measured their understanding because I gave them
an example of a buddy/bully and they responded with which category it was under, what they
would do if it was them, what they should tell the teacher etc. It was a very step by step verbal
communication to see what they understood.
Lesson Breakdown:
How will the lesson progress (step by step).
1. Each student will have a smiley face note sheet on their desk with a name on it.
Each student will write 3 non generic things about their partner that they like about them.
2. Each student will come down to the circle and receive a half sheet of paper. I will
talk about bullying and then they will crumple up their sheet of paper and then will be
instructed to try to make it as wrinkle free as possible.
3. Each student will be asked about a fairy tale (we've been studying fairy tales)
who has a bully and how he/she was a bully.
4. Each student will be given two half circles and they will be instructed to write one
thing on each sheet. One drop will be what a bully would say or do and the other would
be what a buddy would say or do.
5. Lastly, to show that we support the students and that teachers are there if there
is ever a problem, I will have them write some version of a letter to the teachers (Mrs.M
and myself) about being bullied. This was explained as anything they wish we would
know- anything at all. If they did something they werent supposed to do, they can get it
off their chest by writing an anonymous letter (they are allowed to sign their name
however) about this certain topic so that they know that teachers are on their side.
