Teen Data CRA

1.

In this project we were asked to collect and gather data from teens ages 13-19. As a class
we created a survey with questions that teens would answer and most likely not lie about it. The
purpose of the survey was to collect continuous data that would help us create a histogram. A
histogram is a diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a
variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.

2.

After we collected enough data, we had an opportunity to choose what topic we wanted
to work on as individuals to figure out if the data we received was normally distributed or if it
was abnormally distributed.
3.
In order to find the mean or the average of the data my first step was to create a new
document on Google Sheets. Afterwards, I needed to copy the data given and import it to my
new document. When all my data is imported and sorted out on a cell row I can start applying the
formula that will give me the mean. To do this I had to input a specific formula in Google Sheets
which was =Average(B2, B259) The average was for Sheets to figure out the mean of my data
from Block 2 from Row B all the way to B 259. The mean for the data set resulted in 25.

4.

The next step for my Histogram was to figure out the Standard Deviation of the data. A
Standard Deviation determines the quantity expressing by how much the members of a group

differ from the mean value of the group. To find the Standard Deviation in Google Sheets I had
to insert an equation which was =STDEV(B2, B259) This formula tells Google Sheets to find the
quantity of how much far apart it is from the mean.

5.

From my graph created in Google Sheets it shows how the data is not normally
distributed and it doesnt follow the Empirical Rule. The empirical rule is the three sigma rule
(68-95-99.7) Most of my data falls in one standard deviation which shows that the data is not
normally distributed.
