Task 1 Lo2

A story involving minors is simply a story which involves someone under the age
of 18 committing or being involved in a crime. Their names must not and cannot
be shown to the public along with where they go to school and their address.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/page/guidelineslaw-children

To keep them safe from potential paedophiles and in the eyes of the law persons
under the age of 18 must be protected by the Government. But you can give
consent for your name to be mentioned for example Baby P.
Contempt of Court
Contempt of court is when somebody is judged to have interfered with the
Administration of Justice. It can take many forms which all result in Justice if not
taken into the proper measures. This is why contempt of court is considered such
a serious offence. http://www.theguardian.com/media/2009/jan/21/timescontempt-of-court

This article is an example of contempt of court in which a man spoke out against
the verdict in a court of law. This is a good example as it includes hard facts of
the case and how it occurred to become Contempt of Court. It gave details of the
original crime and then why this person stood up against the jurys decision. The
reason this makes a good story for Contempt of Court is also the fact that it is
such a rarity and contempt of court is an easy offence but doesnt happen often
and therefore by the Guardian making this story they have gained status.

Libel and Defamation

Libel and Defamation is the law to protect a persons reputation, this enables
them to sue for damage to their reputation. Here are some things you can get
defamatory if you:

Cause them to be shunned and avoided.

Causes them to gain hatred.
Lowers them in the estimation of Right Thinking.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13751454 this article made by the BBC shows a

good Example of Libel and Defamation. The reason I chose this article for Libel
and Defamation is because I think it is a new type of story as it isnt the average
story in which Libel and Defamation has taken place. This story tells us about the
action through social media and how the accused messaged a member of the
jury through Facebook. An unusual story like this gains a lot more of attention
from the media and means it is a good story as it has gained publicity.
Coverage of Elections
Coverage of elections is simply what can and cant be said on The News during
the election period. The news must have equal coverage of all major parties and
broadcasters must consider equally other parties and independent candidates.
This excludes the BBC. Ofcom give all broadcasters guidelines for the election
period which they must follow but the BBC use their own guidelines to follow.

Task 2
Sensationalism is a form of editorial bias in which a story is over-hyped to gain
public attention.

This story is an example of sensationalism as it isnt really that big of a news

story but has been portrayed to be this huge story to gain publicity and viewers
to the daily mails online page, this is so they can get more money for their
advertising. When you are on the internet and you saw this story you would click
on it to see the photos not because the story is actually relevant for the news.
Some ethical reasons to this story might be that revealing content is being
shown to gain income for the daily mail. This means theyre exposing this young
girl and writing a story about her modelling which has no real public interest or
need to be made a news story out of. This is against many ethical opinions.
Invasion of Privacy
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19595221

This story from the BBC tells us how Will and Kate had their privacy invaded by
Closer magazine. They were staying in a villa in France when a photographer
took photos of the couple topless.
To argue for the magazine I would say that Kate and Will are members of the
royal family and therefore cant escape from the media and should be prepared
for situations such as this one. Also this must not be the first time this has
happened to a member of the royal family.
To argue against the magazine and for Will and Kate I would say that even
though they are Royal Family and are able to have high privileges does not
exclude the fact that they should privacy. Outside of their private life they are
royal family but they deserve to have privacy outside of the media. Closer
magazine were wrong to send out a reporter to the place in which the couple
were staying as it is invasion of privacy and theres no other two ways about it.

Here is another example of invasion of privacy and is probably the most wellknown story related to this story you will find. It tells us about the phone hacking
scandal in which the news of the world hacked stars and members of the royal
familys phone to leak information into their newspapers.
I have filmed a debate on arguing for and against this Story it is on my weebly
page.

News Bulletin

I have chosen to analyse the Midnight News on Radio 4. I will be discussing story
priority and immediacy.
So to start with we have the news headlines and more importantly the story
priority. When the headlines are read out they are said in order of the target
audience, this means that different Radio stations scripts will differ due to the
Target Audiences interests. The stories in this News shows are:

The EU have tripled their funding for the searching of migrants in the
Mediterranean.
14 year old boy from Lancashire charged with Terroristic in sighting.
An Economic think tank has said the four party leaders have not provided
voters with full details of cuts and spending plans.
A mayor from a London Borough has been kicked out of power after
bribing his voters.
The biggest German bank Deutsche bank have been charged 1.7 billion
pounds to America and the UK after trying to manipulate interest rates.
Police have set a marker for 20,000 pounds for information of the gang
responsible for the Hatton Garden Burglary.

They are this in order due to priority for the Target Audience. They started with
the Migrant boat tragedy as it is on [Breaking News] at the moment. Next we
have National Tragedy which is 2nd priority on the Bulletin. The Target audience
on Radio 4 is news and politics so they have all the more important news at the
beginning because the Target Audience want to hear it first. This headline is also
important as it was spoken as just 14 year old boy because of the BBC
regulations concerning Under 18s. This means that the News show cannot reveal
any information about his location and profile. Then we have the Politics this

always is the First thing in line after News of The World. The politics take second
priority as they are being spoken about everywhere due to the current election.
This news headline states financial politics and whats being discusses during the
election, this will change daily but the stories will be similar. The Local News is
next and seeing as Radio 4 is based in the BBC Television Station in London they
will talk about the local London area. This are also related to politics at the
moment as the London Boroughs are part of the election also. Global news is up
next and the topic is Deutsche bank. This is a concern to Radio 4s target
audience as they like hearing about issues facing our country and what other
countries are doing especially when its damaging are financial status. As a big
public figure the Police Force play a key part in what goes on in our country and
when a serious matter has taken place it must be dealt with. They were needing
to advertise the priority in which this problem has caused and want to prevent it
happening again by shouting out to the public there is a 20,000 pound reward for
information on the famous Hatton Garden Burglars. This gives the Target
Audience something to look out for and suspense to make sure Radio 4 dont
lose Listeners and Publicity.
Immediacy is the next part of a news show which must be taken into
consideration. Immediacy is all about how old the stories are and whether they
are follow up stories, meaning they are another part of a story which information
has just been let out to the public.
The stories on Radio 4s Midnight live Bulletin are all daily news stories meaning
the news stories are taken from information extracted from the day the story is
broadcasted, but only in this case. You might find that on another day the Stories
will be follow ups or some are and some arent. There is only one follow up story
in this News bulletin which I will talk about now. The tragic boat incident is the
follow up story here as it has been spoken about in the news already but they are
broadcasting new information on the topic of this story making it a follow up.
The audio clips used in this Radio show are extremely helpful to the
understanding of the story and support the story really well. This is due to the
language used in relevance to the target audience each Story has their own
audio clip which is focused completely on the topic of the story for example for
the Four Party leaders story they included an audio clip of one of the leaders
speaking about their party during the election.
These stories are a mixture of types either Human or Public Interest. Besides the
Migrant tragedy and the 14yr old boy, all the stories are public interest as they
do not involve human tragedy or human action. The others are public interest as
it is stories in which the public are interested in based on things which are
happening within the government and crime laws. Public interest stories tend to
be paid more attention to as they sometimes concern other people and affect
what happens in their lives whereas Human stories are more to tell people about
sad or serious things that have happened.
