Horizon 6th Graders

We wish you all the love and luck in the world
as you leave Horizon and begin a new journey
in middle school. If you ever need us,
know that we are not far away.
From The Horizon PTA

Our 6th Graders are Prepared to be Leaders in Middle School and Beyond
By Mrs. Terrica Johnson
5th Grade Teacher
The sixth graders are over the horizon and on the way to
discovering a new chapter in their lives as they prepare to
leave the halls of Horizon and embark on a new journey as
middle school students. Many of them ask themselves,
Where has the time gone? Whether they have been here
since kindergarten or just joined the Horizon family as a sixth
grader, it seems like so much (and so little) time has passed
since they were mere five year olds in kindergarten. This is
their final month as seniors and the class of 2021 has plenty
to be grateful for as they reflect upon the ways that Horizon
has prepared them to be leaders in and beyond the
classroom. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Amy and Sija were both kindergartners in Mrs. Stepkos
class six years ago. They both fondly remember how their
teachers have used the seven habits over the years to help
them blossom into responsible and motivated young ladies.
Amy says, Mr. Stepko encouraged us to read by reading to
us every day after recess. I feel that because she shared her
love of reading with, she was beginning with the end in mind.
She knew it would help us read better and like reading more
as we grew older. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Hodges helped
me continue to sharpen the saw. She was a dance
choreographer and every day we would sing a few songs and
have a small dance or some movements. In third grade, Ms. S.
Williams taught us to synergize because we did lots of group
work together. All of these teachers helped me become a
leader in my school. l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

Sija also shares her thoughts about some of the teachers

that shes had while she has been at Horizon. Mrs. Stepko was
also an important teacher to her. She says, Mrs. Stepko
encouraged us to try our best. Whenever I would struggle as
a reader, she would continue to practice with me. My love for
reading started with Mrs. Stepko. In first grade, Dr. Barnes
taught us the importance of trust. She always made me feel
like I was surrounded by people I could trust forever. Having
her as a teacher was a win-win situation for me because I was
able to have a great teacher and learn so much too! Many
teachers have taught me Habit 5 Seek first to understand,
then to be understood. But the teacher who taught me the
most about that is Mr. Matthews. He showed me that it is
good to voice my opinions, but at the right time. He has also
taught me the importance of seeing things from other
peoples point of view; which is a bit hard for me personally.
All throughout the year, I have been getting better at
understanding other people. I think now that I have learned
that
habit,
I
will
have
a
successful
life.
The sixth grade students have no doubt left an indelible
impression on all who have crossed paths with them. This
article is much more personal to me because they are the first
fifth graders that I taught here at Horizon. It warms my heart
to see how much they have grown over the past two years
and each of them will always have a special place in my heart.
Congratulations sixth gradersI know you all have great
things waiting for you over the horizon!

Exciting changes are ON THE HORIZON for rising 5th & 6th graders
Based on the results of the surveys Horizon parents filled out this year indicating what sort of elective classes you would like to
see offered at our school, beginning in the fall, Horizon will be offering exploratory classes for our 5 th and 6th graders each 9
weeks. The classes will be taught by our 5 th and 6th grade teachers who share a passion for each specific subject area offered, and
students will choose from a variety of options. The course schedule has not yet been finalized, but some possible offerings include
Introduction to Golf, Keyboarding, Computer Science, Public Speaking, Drama/Production, Service Projects, and Animal Behavior.
Look for more details about Horizons specific exploratory classes at Curriculum Night in August. , , , , , , , , , ,
All elementary schools in Madison City will be adding exploratory classes as a way to continue with our District's excellence in
instruction and to help our students achieve their fullest potential through exploration. This is a great opportunity for our students!
