Jaquan Boxley
Treaty of Versailles DBQ
W.C Period 2
On June 28, 1919, the Versailles treaty was signed by the victorious allied nations of Great
Britain, France, America and by a defeated germany. The framers of the Versailles treaty hoped to
stabilize the war so another catastrophic war doesnt happen. The Versailles treaty helped cause WWII
because it angered Germany and they felt humiliated and wanted revenge.Territorial losses, Military
restrictions, economic reparations and the war guilt clause helped set fire to an angry Germany causing
WWII.
After the war Allied and Associated Governments deiced that Germany should be punished for
what theyd done. The amount of territories lost slimmed Germany down to almost none. After the war
they lost the Polish Corridor, Alsace Lorraine, and Danzig to neighboring countries. this ultimately hurt
germany because the land that they took Germany used very often for trade and it caused them to lose a
lot of its money. On page 363 the map shows the territories lost. this shows that Germany lost the war
even though they thought they were winning until the Versailles treaty was made which angered them.
The Military restrictions for Germany were that they lost their weapons for war to prevent anything
from happening again. the map on page 363 shows the militarized zones that were disarmed due to the
Versailles treaty. This led to the rise of a dictator in Hitler, eventually rearming Germany and stopping the
war debt payments. This led to Germany rising back to the top and becoming a powerful force. It shows
that the Versailles treaty angered Germany and causing them to rebuild which made them stronger.
After the war Germany forced to pay back money that they didnt have. This caused Germany to
go into debt. On page 367 it states that they were required to pay over 367 billion US dollars over a
period of 30 years. this was set on May 1st, 1921. germany, not having the money to pay all debt became
in debt which led to the countries depression.
During the guilt clause Germany accepted all responsibilities from the war damages oh her and her allies.
Germany viewed the clause as a national humiliation, forcing germany to accept full responsibility for
causing the war. Article 231 on page 369 the Treaty of Versailles states (1919) The Allied and Associated
Governments affirm and germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the
loss and damage. The guilt clause humiliated Germany and put them at a state of confusion for a brief
moment because they were not ready for the loss that they were forced to accept.
Although The Versailles treaty shaped the world because it caused Germany to adapt to its
losses and surroundings. It also caused more problems because an angry Germany led to the rise of a
dictator, Hitler. The Treaty of Versailles cause WWII because it gave Germany too much to handle
causing them to shut down and have no leadership. There are 4 main points that set fire to Germany
causing WWII and they are the guilt clause, military restrictions, territorial losses, and economic
reparations.
