MAFS.5.OA.1.1 use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate
expressions with these symbols
MAFS.5.NBT.1.4 use place value understanding to round decimals to any place
MAFS.5.NBT.2.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends
and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between multiplication and division.
MAFS.5.NF.1.2 Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the
same whole, including cases of unlike denominators
MAFS.5.MD.1.1 - Convert among different-sized standard measurement units (i.e., km, m, cm; kg, g;
lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec) within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use
these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
MAFS.5,MD.3.3 Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of
volume measurement.
MAFS.5.MD.3.4 Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and
improvised units
MAFS.7.G.2.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area
of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right
prisms.
MAFS.K12.MP.5.1 use appropriate tools strategically

Teaching Methods
Step-by-Step Plan

Name: Rachael Doyle

I want to teach this lesson in the form of centers, so students are able to get to all of the
different learning points. I believe that this is an engaging way to prepare students for
the FSA. Its important for students to know all of the different math concepts because it
teaches logical and critical thinking. Its important to have these skills for the future.
The main piece of evidence that will be collected throughout this lesson will be based off
of observations and student questions. This lesson is mainly for review purposes only so
its important that students have already mastered these objectives.
The students will record their answers and show their work at 8 of the 9 stations.
As I go around the room and observe students and gage where they are mathematically,
its important for me to know all of the content knowledge related to this lesson
Order of operations and numerical expressions
Decimals
Whole numbers
Fractions
Measurement conversions
Volume
Shapes/polygons
I will ensure students have this previous knowledge by introducing all of the center areas
they will be completing. My learners are 6 5 th grade girls and 12 5th grade boys, the class
is split in about half when it comes to liking and disliking math. I feel that they are ready
for this material, they just need to be determined and confident!

Lesson Implementation
There will be minimal direct instruction and lecture at the beginning of the lesson. After
that, students will be released into partner pairs and responsible for completing the work
at each station.
Time

correspond with their answer sheet). Each student will have a piece

of paper that they will number 1 through 8, (station 9 will be at the
AM
responsibl computer) and that will be where they record their work and

answers. Then, the teacher will tell the students to pick one partner
facilitating and one partner only and go stand at a station. The teacher will

double check that all students have a partner and are at a station.
Then teacher will tell the students that if they have any questions
please dont hesitate to ask. The students will be released to their
stations and have approximately 10 minutes at each station. Explain
that there is absolutely no rush to completely finish each station
its completely okay if you dont! Each student will have a piece of
paper that they will number 1 through 9 and that will be where they
record their work and answers. If possible, music will be played
when its time to transition to the next station.
Rockin Order of Operations and Numerical
Expressions Students will solve problems using the order
of operations, write number sentences as a
numerical/algebraic expression, and write a numerical
expression in words.
Rock Those Decimals Students will manipulate a decimal
in multiple ways: rounding it to the tenths and ones place,
write it in word and explanded form, multiplying it by given
numbers, adding it with given numbers, subtracting it with
given numbers, and working with the powers of ten.
Jazzin With Whole Numbers Students will be given
music related word problem and they will have to read the
problem, write an equation that matches the situation and
solve for the answer. Students will also be dividing and
multiplying 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.
Rock Star Fraction Computation Students will solve the
fraction problem on each star including fractions with
different denominators, addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division
Fantastic Fractions Students will read each word problem,
write an equation that matches the situation and solve for the
answer.
Mix It Up With Measurement Conversions Students are
to read each conversion problem and solve. They are more
than welcome to use their conversion chart if needed.
Turn the Volume Up! Students will read and solve each
problem about determining volume

needs as people and as

Rockin Shapes Students will read each question and

answer with an explanation.
Computer Station Students will go on

Explorer complete any activity theyd like relating to 5 th grade
math standards.
a student struggles with the content?
If a student struggles with the content, I will determine what to do based on the station. I
will have high expectations and suggest drawing pictures or using the whiteboards if that
will help them solve the problem.
a student masters the content quickly?
If a student masters the content quickly, Ill tell the student to create and solve at least
three of their own problems that correlate with what station that they are at
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Besides the station at the computer, all of the stations are related to music. The world
problems and the images along with each stations are related to music. If its possible, I
want to play appropriate music to play during transition time to fit along with the theme.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
Create their own problems
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
Have their peers help with the language barrier
Accommodations (If
needed)
Materials

I found the resources from this lesson at teacherspayteachers.com by Jennifer Findley.

Everything the students are going to need will be in the folder at each station. The
website for the computer station is: www.ixl/com/math/grade-5
