Artifact Reflection
Food Safety Unit Plan, Food Safety Lesson Plan Day 2 and Lesson
Plan Day 3
Fall 2015

Describe your educational experience/artifact:

For this teaching standard I decided to use three artifacts that demonstrate my understanding on
student development. The unit plan and following lesson plans were created in a health methods course.
Both the unit plan and lesson plans were observed and presented to my classmates for beneficial
feedback. These artifacts exemplify my ability to introduce proper intellectual, social and personal
development. Within these artifacts there are opportunities for students to be tested on their understanding
of the material, this will show if the students are learning and growing.
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment

I believe these artifacts best aligns with Standard 2: Development - Teachers know how
children grow. Standard 2 of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards
states: The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides
instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development. I chose these
three artifacts for teaching standard two because I believe they show the opportunity for student
growth. The unit plan demonstrates multiple opportunities for student growth through a variety
of activities and instructions based on food safety. Within the day 2 lesson plan students are
asked to bring along their entrance tickets that answered questions about their at home kitchen
safety. During the Day 3 lesson the students work in groups demonstrating roll-play situations
which demonstrates their advocacy skills on food safety.

UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment

I believe these artifacts align with KS1.e. DESIGNS COHERENT INSTRUCTION The
candidate, with appropriate student input, has the ability to develop relevant, goal-directed,
engaging, clear, and varied learning activities that progress coherently and produce a unified
instructional setting that reflects recent professional research. I believe these artifacts align best
with this KSD because within the unit and lesson plans there are various learning activities that
progress as the unit goes on. The artifacts also display clear instructions for what the student
must accomplish to complete overall food safety goals. These artifacts also make sure to engage
the student in a variety of activities to encourage ones advocacy in the subject.
I believe these artifacts also align with KS3.c. ENGAGES STUDENTS IN LEARNING
The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning process by linking appropriate
content, based upon suitable instructional materials and resources, to students' knowledge and
experience, being certain that all students are cognitively engaged in the activities/assignments
and that the students actively contribute to the content design. Instruction is highly coherent and
appropriately paced for all students and allows for reflection and closure as appropriate. I
aligned this KSD with standard two because my artifacts best represent proper instructional
materials that will engage the students cognitively. These artifacts also reflect on what the
students have learned day to day by using entrance and exit tickets. These lesson plans test the
students knowledge and experience with food safety, by engaging the students in activities such
as building a webquest, I am able to ensure understanding in all aspects of food safety.

I believe these artifacts also align with KS3.b. USES QUESTIONING AND
DISCUSSION TECHNIQUES The candidate's questioning techniques and instructional
strategies are of uniformly high quality with special attention given to available time for student
response, varied levels of questions, and adequate student involvement in the
discussion/instructional process. I also aligned this KSD with standard two because within my
artifacts there are multiple opportunities for questioning techniques and class discussions. Within
the Day 3 lesson plan students are asked to simulate role-play situations dealing with food prep
and food safety, these situations involve a variety of questions and strategies to provide the
healthiest outcome.
Explain what you learned about teaching/learning from this experience:

During these experiences, I learned a lot about how important it is to have great
organization skills as a teacher. Without a proper backbone to a unit plan things can fall apart or
be very hard to create new instructions for multiple days. From this experience I learned that you
must have smooth transitions to help reach the overall goal of the unit or lesson. I also learned
that I need to be more specific with instruction, this will help make sure all my students are on
board and understand the material that is going to be discussed.
Explain what you learned about yourself as a prospective educator as a result of this
experience/artifact:

After creating and teaching these artifacts, Ive learned that I am able to create complex
lessons that give students multiple opportunities for learning. I feel that I need to strive to
encourage more positive feedback for students who are grasping the material properly. This will
help show the students that I am interested in the material which can make class more exciting.
As a teacher I want to make the best learning environment possible and I believe these artifacts
have helped me understand how to encourage student growth.
