The 10th issue of the Transactions of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian
Academy of Sciences contains scholarly works reflecting the newest discoveries and studies in archaeology
and ancient history. The paper by V. V. Pitulko and E. Yu. Pavlova presents new evidence of human settlement in the Siberian Arctic region during the Final Pleistocene. V. B. Bakhshaliev, T. I. Akhundov, A. D. Rezepkin, V. A. Trifonov, D. Abdulloev, R. V. Stoyanov and A. Erim-Ozdogan publish new materials from the
Trans-Caucasus, North Caucasus, Central Asia, and Black Sea region dating from different periods from the
Eneolithic through the Middle Ages. K. N. Stepanova conducted a use-wear study of grinding slabs from the
Late Paleolithic site of Chulatovo 2. The paper by E. Yu. Zakharova is devoted to the role the Kostenki Paleolithic Expedition played in the formation of archaeology in Voronezh State University. L. B. Kircho analyzes
the available evidence on the sratigraphy of Ak-depe one of the key Eneolithic and Bronze Age sites in South
Turkmenistan. M. T. Kashuba considers the problem of warriors graves among sedentary people, as exemplified by the burials with spears of the oldneti culture in the Middle Dniester region. The paper by V. I. Raspopova is devoted to a unique bronze cauldron found in Penjikent (ancient Sogd). The section of Chronicles
informs about the extended sessions of the Institute Academic Board dedicated to the memory of A. M. Belenitsky and I. G. Shurgaya. The volume is intended for archaeologists, culturologists, historians, museum workers, and students of historical faculties.

basal part of the blade. The spearheads have analogies both in the Basarabi culture of
the Danube and among the pre-Scythian finds from the forest-steppe areas adjacent to
the North Black Sea region. The distribution area of the spearheads having holes in
the basal part of the blade (fig. 1) allows to consider them as markers of the Danube
routes of some groups or individual warriors armed with spears. The holes could have
served to attach pendants-symbols (military insignia, emblems, tassels, banners, etc.),
whereby the spears were imparted the function of standards. The military objects of
status (such as spearheads with unusual traits very long, richly decorated, with holes
in the basal part of the blade) had existed all over Europe since the Bronze Age.
