Spatial Interaction (Movement & Migration)

1. Review the Notes under the Migration and answer the corresponding questions these do
not need to be put on your website, but you do need to know these for the test:
a. Migration Trends Powerpoint
1. What is the difference between mobility and migration?
Mobility is a change in residence whereas migration is a permanent or semi-permanent
change in residence crossing an administrative boundary.
2. How does the types of movers demonstrate that mobility is greater than
migration?
With a history of movement and immigration, movers show that mobility is greater than
migration because they have broken the ties with their old home and once they do that, it
is easier to do again and again.
3. Give an example that shows why US mobility and migration rates are high.
Jobs are plentiful in this country and we are motivated to pursue individual achievement,
thus we may move to find a better job.
4. Why have mobility rates in the US declined between the 1940s and 2000?
More dual career households, higher levels of homeownership and improved intra-urban
mobility encourages people to substitute commuting for changes in residence.
5. List and explain 2 possible reasons for the large variations in % born that
reside in states.
Low mobility is associated with stability and a strong sense of place. High mobility is
associated with weak place ties, weak sense of community, high rates of divorce and
suicide, and low levels of charitable giving.
6. Why are highly educated people most likely to make long distance moves?
Information about other places, national and regional labor markets, or they can afford to
move.

b. Global Migration Powerpoint

1. What has occurred in the last half of the 20th Century to cause such a large %

people to move to another country?

Growing inequalities, increasing demographic pressure, the end of the Cold War, and
increasing ethnic and political strife.
2. Find a news article that discusses an issue related to guest workers in a
European
Country and a Middle Eastern country. Describe the issues in each country.
3. From the foreign born as % of European Populations slide, which countries
will need to open up immigration to avoid economic stagnation? Why?
Italy and Spain. They need immigrants to open the gates for foreign investment and let
more money flow in.
4. Why is the African continent home to such a large number of refugees?
Mine workers need work. It brings migrants who experience drought. Civil war in Liberia
causes people to flee.
5. What is the final destination for most refugees?

Spatial Interaction (Movement & Migration)
The United States
c. Migration Streams and Counterstreams Powerpoint
1. Discuss one example of a migration stream and counterstream in the United

States.
One very popular migration stream is from New York to Florida, as retirees move to enjoy
the better climate. A large counter stream occurs from Florida to New York as retirees
realized they made a mistake, and are too sweaty and sunburnt to continue living in such
a climate.
Human trafficking is a massive problem facing the human race in the 21st century. Social
scientists estimate that at any given time, roughly 27 million people worldwide are current
victims of trafficking. The majority of those are girls averaging age 13, bought and sold and
kept in brothels, where they are sold for sex.

Human trafficking strips humans of their humanity, placing them into lives of brutal servitude
away from their friend or families from which they very likely will never emerge. The low
possibility of escape is made evident in the documentary Tin Girls. The film centered
around a girl who, after being brought to Nepal by her uncle at 14, served as a sex worker for
6 years until fleeing. For six months she was able to work with the film team to document her
horrific experience, before once again going missing, assumed to have been recaptured and
resold into servitude. This film makes obvious the challenges of those being trafficked, in that
escape is nearly impossible without fleeing a country or taking on a new identity entirely.
Even with the best of efforts, one may never truly escape this dangerous and disgusting form
of modern slavery.
