For CTE lessons including the use of literacy strategies
Lesson topic: Cardio-Pulmonary vital signs CTE program area: Medical Careers Instructors name: Sharon Foran Purpose/objective of the lesson:
Students will describe the basic structural and functional organization
of the human body used in assessing health. Students will research common and emerging diseases & disorders Students will recognize signs & symptoms of common and emerging diseases & disorders Students will explain the use of diagnostic testing. Students will diagram the structure of cells, tissues, organs & body systems of the cardio thoracic specialty Students will identify the physiology & pathophysiology of the cardiopulmonary system Students will demonstrate proficiency in technology skills Students will obtain and record correctly the vital sign measurements needed for diagnostic purpose.
Content/program/literacy standards addressed in the lesson:
RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. RL.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone RI.9-10.7 Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a persons life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account. RI.6.7 Integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.
Brief description of the lesson:
Students will explore the cardiovascular, respiratory and cardioconduction systems. This is to include the basic anatomy & physiology of both the respiratory, circulatory & lymphatic systems. Medical skill sets include measuring & recording vital signs for diagnostic use. Students will view training video, read text and case studies. In small groups students will discuss case studies and practice clinical competencies. Students will write a reflection on 1 of the case studies, to be discussed in large class group.
To deepen understanding of content and support literacy development, the lesson will include (circle all that apply): Reading Writing Vocabulary Critical Thinking Specific literacy strategies that students will use during the lesson and reason for using each (attach or link to required templates): Medcom video: vital signs Text: cardio chapter 12 https://oplfrpd5.cmpa-acpm.ca/-/-can-i-take-your-vital-signskey-learnings-from-3-case-studies
