Grade 3 Summer Math Homework

Project 2- (Area)
When architects and designers plan buildings, they must be careful to draw their
ideas to scale, to ensure that there is enough room to fit all of the things that they
want. In this project, you are going to be planning out an entire zoo! You must
sketch out your plan on an A3 size paper, and be sure to draw everything to scale.
Remember, when finding the area of a rectangular place, you must multiply the
length times the width. This means, if the giraffe pen must be 36 square
centimeters, you can make it several different ways: 6x6, 18x2, 12x3, etc.
Use the checklist below to design your zoo. Remember that it all must fit onto an A3
paper.

Zoo must include.

Giraffe: Area if giraffe pen is (at least) 36 square centimeters
Tigers: Perimeter (distance around) tiger pen is less than 100 centimeters
Lemurs: Area of lemur pen is (at least) 60 square centimeters
Monkeys: Area of monkey pen is exactly 24 square centimeters
Penguins: Area of penguin pen is at least 5 centimeters
Bears: Perimeter (distance around) bear pen is exactly 80 centimeters
Zoo must have a ticket office, path, store, and restrooms
All places in the zoo are labeled
All measurements are labeled
Total area and perimeter of the entire zoo are written at the bottom of the page
