Week of May 18-22

We will watch a presentation on the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect, on Monday.
On Thursday, around 9:15 our school will be going to Mount Blue High School to watch a
Monmouth Theater performance entitled, The True Story of Little Red.
There is a Teacher Workshop Day on May 22 so there will be no school for students.

Here are a few upcoming events that you may want to mark on your calendar.
Memorial Day is on Monday May 25, so again, there will be no school.
Second Grades Portfolio Night will be on Wednesday May 27 from 4:00-6:00. Please join
us if you can, even if it is only for a few minutes!
The Art Show is also scheduled for the night of Wednesday May 27.

Math: We will finish our unit on addition and subtraction through 200 and word problems
through 100. We will continue to practice subtraction that requires the unbundling of tens and
hundreds. We will also practice using quickdraw and the vertical method to subtract when
there are no tens (subtracting across zero). Students have been taught to ask themselves a
very important question before subtracting: Do I have enough _____? This is an important
step so please encourage your child to use this question. Also, all students should be
practicing their addition facts within 20 at home, whenever possible. !
Spelling: This weeks focus is on working with required second grade spelling words that may
not follow a pattern. Please remind your child to study for a test on THURSDAY.
Reading: End of the year, DRA reading assessments will begin this week. We are continuing
to respond to what we are reading during reading group time. We are also working on
strategies to build fluency and comprehension skills.
Writing: We will continue to work on our stories about Insects, Insects, Everywhere! We will
also begin writing about what we have enjoyed the most this year in second grade.
Science: We are now working on our final science unit of the year. Students will learn about
Matter and solids, liquids, and gas this week. Students will learn to identify the differences
between those categories. Students will also start learning about how items change from a
solid to a liquid or a liquid to a gas and then back again.
Social Studies: None for now.
Vocabulary: The vocabulary words that we will work with this week include: essential,
potential, and isolation. We will also review previously learned words.
