DATA ANALYSIS: TOUCH FOOTBALL

Complete the Laboratory activity outlined below and use the accompanying
guidelines titled Assessing the Nature of the Sport to assist you.
Assessing the Nature of the Sport
Consider the following points when doing your games analysis.
A.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Is the muscular activity maximal (strength) or submaximal (endurance)?

Is the speed of muscular contraction important (muscular power)?
Is the contraction isotonic (concentric / eccentric) or isometric?
Is the activity dependent on a full range of movement (flexibility)?
Is the quickness of movement important (speed, agility, muscular
coordination)?
6. What skills are required?
The answers to these questions determine the components of fitness and
muscular actions.
B.
1. Is the sport continuous or intermittent?
2. What is the duration and intensity of the work interval?
3. Is there a recovery period, and if so for how long?
4. Are the skills performed maximally, how often?
The answers to these questions determine what energy system is
involved.
C.
1. Is there running or jumping?
2. Is there sideways/backwards movement?
3. Is there sprinting, jogging, walking?
The answers to these questions determine the movement pattern.
D.
Observations of the actions of a player determine the muscle groups used and the
muscle actions.
E.
Skills analysis will help determine components of fitness and energy systems. Link
the skills performed to the energy systems and components of fitness.

Laboratory Activity: Games Analysis of Touch Football

AIM: To determine the fitness requirements by analysing the physiological needs of
one participant.
METHOD:
1. View video of one (1) players participation for minimum of 30 minutes, or
view the player live during a game.
2. Record data (you will work in pairs to record one of the following):
Skill frequency:
e.g. pass, tag/touch, rollball, touch down,
etc.
Work- to-Rest ratio: calculate work to rest ratio
Movement patterns:
forwards, backwards, sideways, direction
changes
Playing intensities: walk, jog, sprint, stride (low, medium, high,
very high)
Muscle groups & actions: major muscle groups used, isotonic
3. Present the one type of data you have collected in table form (see over page)
and share this with the rest of your class.
Questions:
1. What type of data did you collect?
2. Which methods of data collection did you use and what are the advantages
and disadvantages of each method?
3.
4.
3.
4.
5.

What other methods could have you used to collect the data?
Why would a coach collect data?
List the components of fitness required by a Touch Football player.
Which energy system is most important why?
After data analysis to work out important information regarding energy
systems and fitness components, the next step is fitness testing. This will
provide a baseline and information about the Touch Football players strengths
and weakness. Using the information you have collected and considering
(specificity, results comparison, sequencing and resourcing) complete
the following table:

6. What are the protocols associated with fitness testing?

7. You can then use these results to design a Touch Football training program.
Why should a games analysis be completed before designing a training
program?
