Great Grandfather

Great Grandfather Richard Fred Schrier, my grandmothers father on my mothers

side of the family, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 22, 1923. He lived in
Minnesota for three years, and then drove cross-country to Portland, Oregon and lived
there for three years. He alternated living in these two places, three years at a time, until
he was twelve years old. Although driving cross-country was unusual during this time he
had family in both places, and that is why he moved back and forth.
At the age of twelve, they permanently settled in Portland. In 1937, he attended
Washington High School in Portland and a year later met Helen Nelmae Stevens. In
1941, Richard graduated high school to attend Oregon State University for two years.
Joining the Navy in 1942 to serve in World War II for three years. After his service, he
drove streetcars and buses for the city of Portland, Oregon until 1950.
During this time working, he married Helen Nelmae Stevens in 1946. Soon after,
a year later Helen gave birth to their only child, Christine Louis Shrier. In 1950, he rejoined the Navy to serve in the Korean War. He remained in the Navy for another twenty
years, making it his full time occupation. In the Navy, he worked maintaining the
electronics for ships. He lived in many countries during his time in the military including
Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Kwajeline in Martial Islands. In 1966, he retired from
the Navy. He then continued to work for multiple electronic companies in California until
1973.
He eventually stopped working due to his wife's condition of partial functionality.
This condition was as a result of a major stroke she had in 1968. To maximize his time
with his wife, he took up a job managing RV and Mobile home parks. This was the last

job he worked and finally retired in 1981. For the next 7 years, Richard and Helen
traveled all across the United States and finally settled in Woodland, California. He then
continued to live there for 21 years until his death, in 2009.
