Lesson Title:

Lines are Beautiful

Grade Level:

Algebra 1 (High School)

Technology Standard (NETS-S)

NETS-S 1,4,5

Subject Area/Content Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.HSF.IF.C.7

Subject Area/Content Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.HSA.CED.A.2

Technology tool/software:

Computer, Internet Access, Microsoft Office

Preparation
Prerequisites: What do students need to know prior to this lesson?
- Student must know the basics of plotting lines on the x and y axis
- Have a basic knowledge of how to use a computer and pilot through the internet
- Have a basic understanding on how use Microsoft office to graph lines
Context: Where does this lesson come in the unit?
The lesson comes in unit 2 for graphing linear equation.

Vocabulary: What concepts will be learned or reinforced in this lesson? How will you make the concepts
development part of the lesson?
Students will be able to:
- know the terminology ( slope intercept form, standard form, line, slop, y intercept)
- Identify slope and y intercept and use to graph
Students will:
- use lines in slope intercept form to create a picture of their choice where all sides are affiliated to
a line in the x and y coordinate plane.
- Use their creativity in relating lines
- Students will develop a blog posting their reaction to the assignment
Materials: What resources are needed to make this lesson successful? What will you need to prepare in
advance?
-

a computer with internet access is needed for students to look for their desired picture
Microsoft office is used to graph the lines and create their picture
A blog platform needs to be available for students

Objectives or Learner Outcomes

How will the learning be measured and assessed?

General Goal(s):
-

picture must contain at least 15 different lines that are graphed and identified to make the picture
blog needs to be 500 words describing the activity and feedback

Specific Performance-Based Objectives:

Students will:
- be able to identify and graph lines at a high percentage using slope intercept form
- be able to describe their experience in a well written blog. Written at appropriate grade level

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In)

An "attention getter" to focus students learning? A discussion or activity to activate students prior
knowledge?
Ask them to look around the room or think around the town where they see lines in the real world. They
must list 10 different things they see on a regular basis where a line is part of it. Examples are: lines on
the street, walls of buildings, electrical wires, etc).

Step-By-Step Procedures
Instruction: List procedures for what will happen first, second, and so on to teach what you expect the
students to learn. EL strategies should include some consideration of language development.
-

warm up identify lines in your world

examples of prior activity pictures from prior students)
description of picture assignment and expectation
description of blog assignment
description of grading for full assignment

Guided Practice (2-3 sentences): What activities will the students engage in to practice the learning?
Include some time when the students are working with partners or in small groups. Be sure to include how
you will check for understanding throughout each stage of your lesson. Write out high level and/or openended questions to ask throughout your lesson.
Students will work with group of 4 to identify and graph different lines in slope intercept form. I will
circulate and check in with each group to assure understanding. I will ask questions such as:
- What is the slope?
- Where does the line cross the y-axis?
Lesson Extension (advanced students): What activities or alternatives will you provide for those who
finish early and want to explore the topic more?
Students must fin the x intercepts of each line.
Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities):
Students are expected to only complete 50% of practice assignment to emphasize fundamentals to
identifying slope and y intercept and graphing.
Connections (to other subjects)
- see how the world is filled with lines

Independent Practice
What will you do to have students practice the learning independently?
Students will have to practice their skills on graphing with a homework assignment on graphing lines.

Closure
Reflect on Anticipatory Set
The world is filled with math. This something that you may not realize. If you look around you will be able
to identify many different shapes. Today we are looking for lines. We have been studying lines and
identifying the slope and y intercept. How can this be related into the real world?

Reflective instructional and theoretical analysis

This plan is something that should engage the student and peak their interest. It finds a
way to relate lines into an everyday scenario to help students see that there are lines that exist in
front of them. Many times students fail to see the relationship that math has with the real world.
This is what makes math so difficult for so many students. Students are more likely to be
interested if they see it can be related to something that they are familiar with. The lesson plan
can evolve as it is implemented to make things better and simplify any issues there may be.
With technology continuously improving there will be better and more stimulating ways
of peaking interest of the students. There are so many resources available the most difficult task
would be to find which resource best fits the students. There will always be resources that can
improve a teacher classroom as long as the teacher is willing to try and implement them. We are
transitioning into an era in education where classrooms have a set of ipads for each student and
textbook exist in them. The availability of technology has never been better. It is crucial that
teachers take advantage of this technology and implement it into the classroom to boost student
success.
In theory the plan seem like it will be successful in giving students something different to
do outside of their normal curriculum. Many times students are bored in class sitting through the
redundancy of a typical math class. Implementing different ways of teaching such as this activity
will allow the students to explore the material beyond a textbook and see how it exist in the
world. The lesson addresses math standards and will help the students understand them better.
The true test will be on how each individual class is able to handle the different environment that
an activity like this offers. It can be an atmosphere that helps students thrive or one that is to

much of a distraction and hinders their learning. The teacher must be vigilant of the activity and
keep the classroom in the right environment.
