Population
Approximately 147 Million people live in
Russia.
Most people in Russia live to the west of
the Ural Mountains where the land is
fertile and easy to
grow on and the
climate is the mildest.

Climate
Due to its northern location, Russia has a rather cold
climate. Winters are long, dark and very cold. In the
summer only the first inches of soil thaw out, the rest is
frozen solid. The grass-covered plains, or steppes of
Russia however, has a less harsh climate and the soil is
quite rich. Russias most productive agriculture comes
from the steppes.

Landforms
Russia mostly has plains and plateaus
with mountain ranges interrupting them.
Russia is the home of the largest inland
body of water in the world, it is called the
Caspian Sea.

Culture
Around 147 million people live in Russia,
most of them live west or the Ural
Mountains where the climate is the
mildest and the land is the most fertile.
Most of the Russians are descendants
of Slavic peoples or Slavs. Slavs from
northeastern Europe settling in what is
now western Russia. Starting in the 1400s
the states were ran by ruthless and
powerful czars for over 400 years.

Culture

In 1917 the last czar was overthrown, and a

Communist dictatorship came through. The
Russian Empire was now the Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics. The Communists
made the union an industrial power but
yet it denied the peoples basic rights.
In 1991 the Communists fell and was no
longer in power, taking the Soviet Union
along. The fall of Communism flipped
Russias economy upside down.

Culture
Russia has a great tradition of literature,
music, and art. You can see that in Russias
architecture. Soccer and tennis is loved in
Russia. Russians love to get together with
their families and celebrate
holidays such as New
Years Eve.

Economics
For about 70 years, Russia along with
other republics shared an economy. Many
crops such as wheat were grown on land
owned by the government. During the
1990s Russia and the other republics
became independent and are now working
hard to make a living.

Economics
Russias economy used to focus on Heavy
Industry or making making machinery and
large equipment. Today the economy
mostly focuses on Light Industry, or
making goods like household products,
clothes and furniture.But farming also
happens in regions.

Economics
The farming that takes place is usually
raising dairy cattle and growing crops such
as oats and grains. Also grown are corn,
sugar beets, potatoes, and flax. The flax
grown is used to make textiles.
