Interconnected World

Social media is used to connect people all around the world. This makes globalization
much easier because it is now easier to access other countries needed to globalize something.
Social media sites, such as Facebook, are being used by individuals and companies alike
throughtout the globe. Over 200 million people from the emerging nations of Brazil, India,
Indonesia, and Mexico are now active Facebook users (Social Media Has Changed How We
Connect, page 3). Creating closer connections among nations is now simplified with the use of
social media due to the fact that literally everyone is using it. By simply logging onto a network
like Facebook, nations can resolve their conflicts virtually/verbally without having to result to
war or taking the time to travel to the country to meet face to face with the officials.
Although easier to communicate and globalize because of social networking,
globalization has its pros and cons like many other things. Proponents believe that everyone
benefits from globalization, as evidenced in lower prices, greater availability of goods, better
jobs, and access to technology (Globalization, Antiglobalization, and Global Pressures, page 8).
However, critics disagree, noting that the high number of jobs moving abroad as a result of the
offshoring of business services jobs to lower-wage countries does not inherently create greater
opportunities at home and that the main winners of globalization are the company executives
(Globalization, Antiglobalization, and Global Pressures, page 8). Both sides of the spectrum have
valid arguments as the pros and cons are revealed to globalization.
Whether a fan or not, globalization is happening and will continue to happen. Emerging
countries such as Brazil and Indonesia are most likely to benefit from globalization whereas the
current power countries such as the United States and Britain might be more likely to experience
setbacks as the global economy shifts to include more of the world.
Social media helps globalization. Globalization helps developing and emerging countries.
Power countries might suffer a bit, but thats the circle of the economy.
