ME 3322A

Mid Term Exam #1

Fall 2011

Problem 1 (30 points)

A rigid tank contains 12 kg of nitrogen. The tank is equipped with an electric resistance of 11 ohms that
carries a current of 0.45 Amperes for one hour. The specific internal energy of nitrogen increases by 7
kJ/kg during the process. During the process find:
a) The direction and magnitude of work exchanged between the system and the surroundings
b) The direction and magnitude of heat transferred between the system and the surroundings

Problem #2 (30points)
A closed and rigid tank with 1.5 m3 volume initially contains saturated vapor Refrigerant 134a at 50 C.
The system is cooled until its temperature reaches 10C. Calculate:
a) the mass of vapor at the beginning and end of the process
b) the amount of heat and work exchanged between the system and surroundings

Problem # 3 (40 points)

5.6 kg of water is contained in a piston-cylinder system which undergoes a constant-pressure process. The
pressure is 1 bar. Initially the water substance in the cylinder has a quality of 65%. During the process
the piston is heated until the temperature of its content reaches 200C.
a) Find the magnitude and direction of work that is exchanged between the system and surroundings
b) Find the magnitude and direction of heat that is exchanged between the system and surroundings
