only 50% of murder victims generally are white. Jurors in Washington state are three times more likely
to recommend a death sentence for a black defendant than for a white defendant in a similar case. In
Louisiana, the odds of a death sentence were 97% higher for those whose victim was white than for
those whose victim was black. A study in California found that those who killed whites were over 3
times more likely to be sentenced to death than those who killed blacks and over 4 times more likely
than those who killed Latinos. North Carolina found that the odds of receiving a death sentence rose
by 3.5 times among those defendants whose victims were white.

That the color of a defendants and victims skin plays an unacceptable role in deciding who receives
the death penalty in America.

white victims account for about of murder victims. As of October 12, 2002 twelve people have been
executed where the defendant was white and the victim was black compared with 178 black
defendants executed for murders with white victims. A study concluded by the University of Maryland
that defendants are much more likely to be sentenced to death if they have killed a white person.
