Introduction
What exactly is a person doing when they worship? Can we worship Jesus Christ if he is not God? If we worship
Jesus does that mean he is God? Is Jesus worshipped as only God can be worshipped? Can we worship other people
and it not be a sin? What is idolatry? Is it idolatry to worship people?
This section will show that the bible identifies worship as something that can be given to God, Christ, angels, and
people and it not be sinful or idolatry. This will be news to most people because most of us only associate the word
worship with a behavior only given to God. I am going to identify the meaning of the word worship in the bible
which will be the cornerstone to understanding how it can be given to Jesus and there be no sin, no idolatry, and no
implication that Jesus is God. This study will also identify the biblical definition of idolatry which is different to the
way I hear most theologians use it when they are arguing against Jesus being worshipped.
If this study seems a little long, spend a little time looking at the index and then go to the end and review the list of
summaries and Final conclusion. If you have questions from that point, refer back to the Part in question.

Rules of Worship for God and gods

Part 1A Bow Down to God only. Do not Bow Down to other gods.
The people in the OT were commanded to bow down to the LORD God and not to bow down to other so called
gods.

Deuteronomy 32:43 Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of
his children and takes vengeance on his adversaries. He repays those who hate him and cleanses his peoples
land.
All the heavens are said to bow down to God
Exodus 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods (Elohiym/H430) before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or
that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down (Saha/H7812) to them or serve (Abad/H5647) them, for I the LORD your God am
a jealous God,
Saha/H7812 to depress, i.e. prostrate (espec. reflex. in homage to royalty or God):bow (self) down,
crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.
Moses is quoting God who said do not bow down to idols do not bow down to other gods (Elohiym/H430)
Elohiym is usually translated God referring to Jehovah as the God of the Bible.
Do not Saha or Abad to idols or other so called Elohiym
Exodus 23:24

an alien god (El/H410)
Dont bow down, Saha/H7812, to alien gods
Summary:
Bow down from Saha/H7812.
The OT people were told to bow down to the LORD God
The OT people were instructed to not bow down to other Gods or gods
Do not, Saha/H7812, other elohiym or el
In Part 4A people are shown respectfully bowing down, Saha/H7812, to other people
In Part 4B people are shown wrongfully bowing down , Saha/H7812, to other Gods or gods

Part 1B Serve the LORD God only. Do not Serve other gods
The people in the OT were commanded to serve the LORD (Jehovah) God only, but not to serve other gods
On every occasion all caps LORD is from the Hebrew word YHWH often written Jehovah in many translations.
Deuteronomy 6:13
Fear the LORD your God, serve (Abad/H5647) him only and take your oaths in his name
In this translation the Hebrew word Abad becomes serve rather than worship
Serve the LORD (Jehovah) God only
Exodus 23:25 you shall serve (Abad/H5647) the LORD your God, and he will bless your bread and your
water, and I will take sickness away from among you.

The people are told to serve the LORD their God

Exodus 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods (Elohiym/H430) before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or
that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down (Saha/H7812) to them or serve (Abad/H5647) them, for I the LORD your God am

2 Kings 17:35 When the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: "Do not worship
(Yare/H3372) any other gods (Elohiym/H430) or bow down (Saha/H7812) to them, serve (Abad/H5647)
them or sacrifice to them.
Yare/H3372 usually means to fear or revere is here translated worship
Again serve comes from Abad/H5647
Do not serve other Gods.
Mathew 4:10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and
serve him only.' [Deut. 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name] "
Jesus reminds Satan that Deuteronomy 6:13 says to serve God only. They both know it.
Luke 4:8 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'
Jesus quotes the OT and tells Satan to serve God only
Summary:
Serve from the Hebrew word Abad/H5647
The OT people were told to serve God only
The OT people were told not to serve other gods
Jesus confirms this in the NT
In Part 4C people are shown rightly serving other people
In Part 4D people are shown wrongfully serving other gods

Part 1C Worship God Only. Do not Worship other gods

The people in the OT and NT were commanded to worship the LORD God . They were commanded not to worship
to other so called gods.
1 Chronicles 17:29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him!
Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
People are commanded to worship, Saha/H7812, the LORD God

14 for you shall worship (Saha/H7812) no other god (El/H410), for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a
jealous God

People were commanded not to worship (Saha/H7812) other gods

Other gods include: Baal of Peor, Sun, Moon, Stars, made of wood, stone, silver, gold. Asherah poles, sacred
stones, Ashtoreth, Chemosh, Molech, Golden calves, idols, Nisroch, goat idols, starry hosts, images, metal calf idol,
Deuteronomy 8:19 And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve (Abad/H5647)
them and worship (Saha/H7812) them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish
Worship from Saha/H7812
Do not worship, Saha/H7812, other gods
If people commit idolatry and worship, Saha/H7812, other gods they will surely perish.
Mathew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world and their glory.
9 And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship (Proskyneo/G4352) me.
10 Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship (Proskyneo/G4352) the
Lord your God and him only shall you serve (Latreuo/G3000).
Luke 4:8 Same passage
Both, as quotes, could be from a combination of OT scriptures including 1 Chronicles 17:29 and Psalm 29:2 for
Worship (Saha/H7812) the Lord your God and then Deuteronomy 6:13 and 10:20 for serve (Abad/H5647) God
only.
Proskyneo/G4352: (mean. to kiss, like a dog licking his masters hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (lit. or fig.)

Satan asks Jesus to worship, Proskyneo/G4352, him. Jesus says to worship, Proskyneo/G4352, God only. To serve,
Latreuo/G3000, God only.
Summary:
The OT word Saha/H7812 is translated worship here and bow down in other passages shown in 1A.
The OT people were instructed to worship the LORD God
The OT people were instructed to not worship, Saha/H7812, other false gods or they would perish
Greek term Proskyneo/G4352 is a direct translation of the Hebrew word Saha/H7812.
The NT people were instructed to worship, Proskyneo/G4352, only God.
In Part 4E people are shown respectfully worshiping other people
In Part 4F people are shown wrongfully worshiping other gods
Summary for 1A, 1B or 1C
The OT commanded people to bow down, serve and worship the LORD God
The OT commanded people do not bow down or serve or worship any other gods.
As will be shown in Part 4A-C this did not mean people could not bow down or serve or worship other
people. What it meant is dont have other gods, dont bow down, serve or worship other gods which were man
made idols which is idolatry shown in Part 4D-F.
Correct Worship and Idolatry

Part 2A Worshipping God was to be a specific way:

Deuteronomy 12: 4 -11 You must not worship (Asa/H6213) the LORD your God in their way.

But you are to seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to put his Name
there for his dwelling. To that place you must go;
6
there bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, what you have vowed to give
and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.
7
There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in
everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you.
8
You are not to do as we do here today, everyone as he sees fit, 9 since you have not yet reached the resting
place and the inheritance the LORD your God is giving you.
10
But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance,
and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety.
11
Then to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his Namethere you are to bring
everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the
choice possessions you have vowed to the LORD.
Gods followers are commanded to worship, follow, and serve God in a specific way, and that way only.
Isaiah 29:13 The Lord says: These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me. Their worship (Yare/H3372) of me is made up only of rules taught by men
We can be far from God if our worship is only rules taught by men
Summary:
Worshipping God had to be done in a specific way in the OT

Part 2B Wrong worship and the death penalty:

Exodus 22:20 Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.
Sacrificing to other gods brought the death penalty
Deuteronomy 8:19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship
(Abad/H5647) and bow down (Saha/H7812) to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be
destroyed.
The words Abad and Saha would be better translated serve and worship/bow down.
God threatened to kill these people if they followed or worshiped or bowed down to other Gods
However, people still followed other people, and bowed down before them, that was not wrong
Summary:
The God of the OT said he will destroy people who worship other gods

Part 3A Idols and False gods:

Idol in the OT eleven times. Pesel/H6459 Idol or image. In the NT four times
Idols in the OT 120 times in the NT once.
Idols are Manmade
Isaiah 40:18 To whom then will you liken God (El/H410), or what likeness compare with him?
19 An idol (Pesel/H5469)! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver
chains.

20 He who

is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful
craftsman to set up an idol (Pesel/H6459) that will not move.
The idol is a handmade casting in gold and silver, perhaps wood.
Isaiah 44:10 Who fashions a god or casts an idol (Pesel/H6459) that is profitable for nothing?
15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes
bread. Also he makes a god (El/H410) and worships (Saha/H7812) it; he makes it an idol (Pesel/H6459) and
falls down before it.
17 And the rest of it he makes into a god (El/H410), his idol (Pesel/H6459), and falls down to it and
worships (Saha/H7812) it. He prays to it and says, Deliver me, for you are my god (El/H410)!
19 No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, Half of it I burned in the fire; I also
baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination?
Shall I fall down before a block of wood?
The man makes a god, his idol. The man calls the idol his god
The god is made of wood
Acts 7:41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol (Eidolon/G1497) and were
rejoicing in the works of their hands.
The people rejoiced in the idol, the work of their hands.
Idols are not gods
2 Chronicles 33:7 And the carved image of the idol (Pesel/H6459) that he had made he set in the house of
God, of which God said to David and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have
chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever,
The carved image is a man made fabrication of a god, an idol, that does not exist.
The people falsely believe the carved image to be a representation of an invisible being.
Deuteronomy 32:21 they have made me jealous with what is no god (El/H410); they have provoked me to
anger with their idols (H1892).
The idols of gods who are no gods.
1 Corinthians 8:4-6 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols (Eidolothytos/H1494), we know that
an idol (Eidolon/H1497) has no real existence, and that there is no God (Theos/G2316) but one.
5 For although there may be so-called gods (Theos/G2316) in heaven or on earthas indeed there are many
gods (Theos/G2316) and many lords (Kyrios/G2962)
6 yet for us there is one God (Theos/G2316), the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist,
and one Lord (Kyrios/G2962), Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
An idol has no real existence
So called gods, do not really exist
There is only one real God, LORD/YHWH God.
God Commands People not to Worship Idols
Leviticus 19:4 do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am the LORD your God.
God commands people not to turn to idols or make and gods out of metal

Leviticus 26:1 You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a
figured stone in your land to bow down (Saha/H7812) to it, for I am the LORD your God.
God commands do not make idols, do not bown down (Saha/H7812) to the idol.
Psalm 97:7 All worshipers of images are put to shame, who make their boast in worthless idols;
Anyone who worships an image or a worthless idol will be put to shame
Summary:
Isaiah 40 The idol is a handmade casting in gold and silver, perhaps wood.
Isaiah 44 The god is an idol. The god is made of wood
Acts 7 The people rejoiced in the idol, the work of their hands.
Chron 33 The carved image is a man made fabrication of a god, an idol, that does not exist.
The people falsely believe the carved image to be a representation of an invisible being.
Deut 32 The idols of gods who are no gods.
1 Cor 8 An idol has no real existence. So called gods, do not really exist. There is only one real God, LORD God.
Lev 19 God commands people not to turn to idols or make and gods out of metal
Lev 26 God commands do not make idols, do not bown down (Saha/H7812) to the idol.
Psalm 97 Anyone who worships an image or a worthless idol will be put to shame
These scriptures give us the definition of an idol.
No scripture says that a human being or angel is an idol or can be an idol
These biblical definitions are extremely important when accusing others of idolatry.

Part 3B Idolatry:
1 Samuel 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.
Idolatry is compared to iniquity or sin.
Ezekiel 23:49 And they shall return your lewdness upon you, and you shall bear the penalty for your sinful
idolatry, and you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
The penalty from God for idolatry.
Daniel 6:6-11 Then these high officials and satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him, O King
Darius, live forever!
7 All the high officials of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors are
agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an injunction, that whoever makes petition to
any god or man for thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Now, O king, establish the injunction and sign the document, so that it cannot be changed, according to the
law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.
9 Therefore King Darius signed the document and injunction.

10 When

Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his
upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave
thanks before his God, as he had done previously.
11 Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petirion and plea before his God
The penalty from the king was death, Daniel chose to obey God rather than the king
Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
Summary:
Idolatry is clearly a sin.
3A-B shows that whatever idol is the object of attention that takes away from and takes upon itself that which is
rightfully due to God, this is idolatry.
To say that it is idolatry to worship another human being or an angel, is an incorrect non biblical definition.

Part 3C Idolater
The NT gives an expanded definition of someone who is an idolater.
Idolater is in the NT seven times 1 Cor 5:10, 5:11, 6:9, 10:7, Eph 5:5, Rev 21:8, 22:15.
ESV 1 Corinthians 5:9-11 wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people
10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy (G4123) and swindlers, or idolaters
(G1496), since then you would need to go out of the world.
11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of
sexual immorality or greed (G4123), or is an idolater (G1496), reviler, drunkard, or swindlernot even to
eat with such a one.
Vs9 Do not associate with sexually immoral people
Vs10 Not referring to greedy/G4123 or idolater/G1496 of the world, but "brothers"
Vs11 But do not associate with brothers who are greedy/G4123 or an idolater/G1496 in the church.
Paul says do not associate with either 1/ the greedy/G4123 or 2/ idolaters/G1496
In this verse he does not say that one is the other!
ESV Ephesians 5:5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who
is covetous (G4123) that is, an idolater (eidololatres/G1496), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ
and God.
Now Paul seems to say that a covetous (G4123/ greedy) person is an odolater.
Why did it change from being two different identities to one meaning the other?
This is the only time in the bible that an idolater is defined as being greedy, it is not part of the usual definition.
It seems strange that the OT has defined idols and idolatry fairly clearly as described in Part 3A-B and now
Paul says that a covetous/greedy person is also an idolater
Covetous from the Greek Pleonektes/G4123: In the NT four times and used only by Paul. It is translated to
greedy in 1 Corinthians 5:10, 5:11, and 6:10; and to covetous in Ephesians 5:5.
Holding (desiring) more, eager for gain, greedy, covetous.
HCSB Ephesians 5:5 Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not
have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God
This translation does not say that one is the other, it does not say that a greedy person = an idolator. It says that any
person who is greedy in addition to being an idolator!

Others such as the KJV, NASB, YLT etc write it this way.
Summary:
Depending on which translation we use for Ephesians 5:5 someone who is greedy or covetous may be an idolater.
Because there is doubt and no other support, for the time being the OT definition stands and being greedy is not not
included in the definition. Even if we do include it, the fact that we might worship Jesus in some way does still not
constitute idolatry because Jesus is not greedy or covetous!

Part 4A People Rightly Respectfully Bowed Down to other People:

In part 1A people were told do not bow down to other gods, not to Saha/H7812 other elohiym or el.
As shown here the people did respectfully bow down, Saha/H7812, to other people. They were not going against
God in any way by doing this, this behavior had no sin attached to it, it is not idolatry as defined in 3A and 3B.
Genesis 18:2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from
the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed (Saha/H7812) low to the ground
Saha/H7812 to depress, i.e. prostrate (espec. reflex. in homage to royalty or God):bow (self) down,
crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.
Abraham bowed down, Saha/H7812, to three men
Genesis 23:12 Again Abraham bowed (Saha/H7812) down before the people of the land
Abraham bowed down, Saha/H7812, before the people
Genesis 27:29 May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may
the sons of your mother bow down (Saha/H7812) to you
Isaac talking to his son Jacob, who is tricking Isaac into giving him Esaus blessing
Genesis 33:3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down (Saha/H7812) to the ground seven times as he
approached his brother
Jacob on meeting with Esau after many years, bows down to him
Genesis 33:7 Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down (Saha/H7812). Last of all came Joseph
and Rachel, and they too bowed down (Saha/H7812)
Leah, Joseph, Rachel all bow down to Esau
1 Chronicles 29:20 Then David said to all the assembly, Bless the LORD your God. And all the assembly
blessed the LORD, the God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and paid homage (Saha/H7812) to the
LORD and to the king
In this example King David had the assembly pay homage, Saha/H7812, to himself as the king of the land. As a
highly regarded example of a man of God this was not a sinful thing for him to do.
Summary:
Abraham, Jacob Leah, Joseph, Rachel, Davids assembly who were all Godly people all respectfully bowed down,
Saha/H7812, to other people. There was no sin in what they did, they were not commiting idolatry.

Part 4B People Rightly Served other People:

In part 1B the people were told to serve, Abad/H5647 Jehovah God only in both the OT and the NT. Here we will
see that people rightly served other people. They were not going against God in any way by doing this, this
behavior had no sin attached to it, it is not idolatry as defined in 3A and 3B.
Genesis 25:23 And the LORD said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you
shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.
One nation will serve the other, a normal way of the process of life. There is no sin in this behavior, there is no
idolatry.
Genesis 29:20 So Jacob served (Abad/H5647) seven years to get Rachel,
Jacob served another man
Exodus 18:26 They served (Sapat/H8199) as judges for the people at all times
People served other people
Summary:
People rightly served other people
There was nothing ungodly about one person serving another person

Part 4C People Rightly Respectfully Worshipped other People

In part 1C people were told not to Saha/H7812 other elohiym or el, do not worship to other gods.
Here we see that people did respectfully worship or bow down Saha/H7812 to other people. They were not going
against God in any way by doing this, this behavior had no sin attached to it, it is not idolatry as defined in 3A and
3B.
Wycliffe Genesis 23:7 And Abraham rose and worshipped (Saha/H7812) the people of the land and the
sons of Heth.
8 He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron
son of Zohar on my behalf
Abraham worshipped, Saha/H7812, the people of the land
Most bible translations translate the Hebrew word Saha/H7812 to bow down. It means either.
Wycliffe Genesis 33:3 And Jacob went before them, and worshipped (Saha/H7812) lowly to the earth seven
times, till his brother nighed.
4 And so Esau ran against his brother, and embraced him, and Esau held his neck, and kissed him, and they
wept
Jacob worshipped, Saha/H7812, his brother Esau
Most bible translations translate Saha/H7812 to bow down. It means either
Genesis 33:6 Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down (Saha/H7812).
The maidservants and children bowed down or worshipped, Saha/H7812, Esau
Joshua 5:14 So He said, No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped (Saha/H7812), and said to Him, What does my Lord
(Adown/H1130) say to His servant?
Then the Commander of the LORDs army said to Joshua, Take your sandal off your foot, for the place
where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.
Joshua, a man of God, fell and worshipped the commander addressing him as lord. This was a normal way to show
reverence and respect for a man of high position, there is no idolatry and no sin.
Wycliffe Ruth 2:10 And she felled on her face, and worshipped (Saha/H7812) on the earth and said to him,
that no man be diseaseful to thee; but also if thou thirstiest, go to the fardels, and drink waters, of which my
young men drink
Ruth fell on her face and worshipped Boaz
Most bible translations translate the Hebrew word Saha/H7812 to bow down
Summary:
The passages quoted here where people worship, Saha/H7812, other people show that it was a normal OT behavior
for those who wanted to show reverence, honor, and respect to another person for different reasons.
Although each of these scriptures dont usually use the English word worship, the Hebrew word that bow down
is translated from is the same Hebrew word, Saha/H7812. From a word count of 172 Saha is translated into
worship 91 times in the OT is also translated into bow or bowed or bow down or bowed down 49 times meaning
to bow down prostrate oneself, or before God in worship. The remainder of the times Saha/H7812 is written it is
translated into prostrated, paid homage, fall down etc
People worshipped or resepectfully bowed down to other people which was not a sin in Gods eyes. There are no
commandments that say people should not Saha/H7812 to other people.
The problem lies in our current modern day definition of the word worship in which it is only directed at God or a
god, this was not the case in the Hebrew OT when they used the word Saha/H7812.

Part 4D People Wrongly Bowed Down to Other gods

In part 1A people were told not to Saha/H7812 other elohiym or el, do not bow down to other false gods.
However as shown here the people did wrongly bow down, Saha/H7812, to other false gods
Numbers 25:1-2 While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.
2 These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down (Saha/H7812)
to their gods.
The Israelites bowed down to other gods which caused the LORD to anger.
Judges 2:12 And they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land
of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and
bowed down (Saha/H7812) to them. And they provoked the LORD to anger.
Summary:
Here we see the people disobeyed God and wrongly bowed down to other gods.
These are clear cases of idolatry when people were bowing down to gods that didnt exist as defined in 3A and 3B

Part 4E People Wrongly Served other gods

In part 1B the people were told to serve, Abad/H5647 Jehovah God only in both the OT and the NT. Here we see
that people wrongly served other gods. They were sinning or going against God by doing this.

Deuteronomy 4:27 And the LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number
among the nations where the LORD will drive you.
28 And there you will serve (Abad/H5647) gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, that neither
see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29 But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all
your heart and with all your soul.
God knew that the people would serve, Abad/H5647, other gods, false gods.
Judges 10:6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served (Abad/H5647)
the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the
Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.
The people sinfully turned from the LORD God and served other false gods.
Deuteronomy 28:36 The LORD will bring you and your king whom you set over you to a nation that neither
you nor your fathers have known. And there you shall serve (Abad/H5647) other gods of wood and stone
God knew that the people would serve, Abad/H5647, other gods
Summary:
People wrongly served other gods
Here we see that people disobeyed God and wrongly served other gods.
These are clear cases of idolatry when people were serving gods that didnt exist as defined in 3A and 3B

Part 4F People Wrongly Worshipped Other gods

In part 1B the people were told to worship, Saha/H7812 Jehovah God only. Here we see that people wrongly
worshipped other gods. They were sinning or going against God by doing this.
Deuteronomy 17:3 and has gone and served other gods and worshiped (Saha/H7812) them, or the sun or
the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have forbidden,
People went and served other gods and worshipped them
Deuteronomy 29:26 and went and served other gods and worshiped (Saha/H7812) them, gods whom they
had not known and whom he had not allotted to them.
People went and served other gods and worshipped them
Psalm 4:2 How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame ? How long will you love delusions and
seek false gods ?
People were seeking false gods
Jeremiah 13:25 This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you
have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.
The people had trusted in false gods.
Summary:

People wrongly worshipped other gods, which the LORD had forbidden
These are clear cases of idolatry when people were worshipping gods that didnt exist as defined in 3A and 3B

Part 4G Old Testament Summary so Far

So far we have confirmed the following
1A/ 1B/ 1C/ People are commanded to bow down Saha/H7812, serve Abad/H5647, and worship Saha/H7812 God
1A/ 1B/ 1C/ God commanded people not to bow down, serve, or worship other gods.
3A/ 3B/ The biblical definition of idolatry is worshipping man made images of gods that do not exist
4A/ 4B/ 4C/ Godly people rightly bowed down, served, and worhsipped other people. This is not idolatry or sinful.
4D/ 4E/ 4F/ People sinfully bowed down, served and worshipped other gods which is idolatry and sinful.
1C/ The Hebrew word Saha/H7812 is the Greek equivalent of Proskyneo/G4352
It is important to confirm the OT findings so far as they have a huge bearing on the second half of this study.
New Testament
Worship for People, Angels, and gods

Part 5A People Rightly Respectfully Worshipped other People

The Greek word Proskyneo/G4352 is not always translated to the English word worship however, it still meant
the same thing which is to bown down or worship. This is exactly the same behavior identified in the OT in Part
4A-C where there is no idolatry and no sin when one person does it to another.
Mathew 18:24 then he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he
had, and payment to be made.
26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring (Proskyneo/G4352) him, Have patience with me, and I will
pay you everything.
27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
The servant wanted to show respect and reverence to his master who he owed a huge debt, in this parable he did
this by Proskyneo/G2352. As it was in the OT and now in the NT Jesus tells a story of a man who bowed down or
worshipped another person as a sign of respect, there is no idolatry and no sin in this situation.
Acts 10:22-24 And they said, Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken
of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear
what you have to say.
23 So he invited them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the
brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together
his relatives and close friends.
25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him.
26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, Stand up; I too am a man.
Vs22 Cornlelius is an upright and God fearing man who is well spoken by the whole Jewish nation was of such
standing that an angel came to him to direct him.
Vs25 Cornelius worships Peter. As per OT behaviors Cornelius, the upright and God fearing man showed honor and
respect to Peter. Cornelius did no sin and did not commit idolatry as described in Part 3A and 3B.
1 Thess 5:12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and
admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.
Any non Jew who had just met an angel from God would most likely act the same way with the Jewish person he
was sent to meet. They all knew that Jews were the nation of God.

Vs26 Why did Peter tell him to stand up, I too am a man? As a sign of respect and honor to Cornelius, and in
order to behave as a humble servant himself.
Hebrews 11:21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship
(Proskyneo/G4352) over the head of his staff
It is not completely clear to me who Jacob bows in worship to. God is not mentioned so I lean toward Jacob bowing
to the sons of Joseph just as the wise men bowed to a baby Jesus.
Revelation 3:9 Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not,
but liebehold, I will make them come and bow down (Proskyneo/G4352) before your feet, and they will
learn that I have loved you.
Jesus who has been speaking since the end of chapter 9 now says he will make the disobedient Jews bow down,
(Proskyneo/G4352) to the patient disciples. There is no example of Jesus telling or making some one sin, and he is
not doing that in this example.
Summary:
Mathew 18 Jesus tells a parable of a servant who Proskyneo/implores/bows/worships to his master out of reverence
and respect
Acts 10 The man of God, Cornelius, Proskyneo /worshipped to Peter, another man of God. There is no sin or
idolatry here
Hebrews 11 Jacob bows in worship to the children of Joseph
Revelation 3 Jesus will tell the disobedient Jews to Proskyneo/bow down, to the patient disciples
Just as in the OT, Jesus confirms that it is perfectly acceptable to bow down/worship/Proskyneo another human
being.

Part 5B John worshipped the angel and was told not to:
An angel has a discussion with John and tells him to worship God
Revelation 19:9-10 And the angel said to me, Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage
supper of the Lamb. And he said to me, These are the true words of God.
10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship (Proskyneo/G4352) him, but he said to me, You must not do that!
I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship
(Proskyneo/G4352) God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy
Hold to the testimony of Jesus which is to worship God.
Vs10 John is a Godly man trained by Jesus. He is of such standing that he has bible books named after him.
Vs10 John (like Cornelius the centurion did to Peter) worships the angel. As per OT behaviours John showed honor
and respect to the angel. John did no sin and did not commit idolatry as described in Part 3A and 3B
1 Thess 5:12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and
admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.
Any human being who had just met an angel from God would most likely act the same way. If I thought I were in
the heavenlly realms, I would be doing a lot of respectful bowing down to anyone who was representing God.
Vs26 Why did the angel tell him do not do it. I am a fellow servant? As a sign of respect and honor to John, and
to let John know that the angel was a humble servant too.
Revelation 22:8-9 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen
them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me.
9
But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of
all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!"

Again John worships the angel and has to be told not to do it but to worship God only
Again there is no idolatry and no sin.
Summary:
John is told not to worship angels but to worship God.
In the same way Cornelius the centurion, a man of God, had worshipped Peter and was told not to.
In another way, Satan asks for worship and is told by Jesus to worship God only.

Part 5C People Wrongly Worhipped other gods

Just as in the OT people wrongly worship other so called gods in the NT
Acts 7:43 You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to
worship (Proskyneo/G4352); and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.
This is a reference to Moses and Aaron and the golden calf etc who a long time before had committed idolatry by
worshipping false gods
Revelation 9:20 the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of
their hands nor give up worshiping (Proskyneo/G4352) demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and
stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk
This apocalyptic dream of John.
My viewpoint on this part of Revelation is that it is in the past and has already happened and is therefore a reference
to OT idolatry.
Summary:
Acts: A reference to OT worship and idolatry by the Israelites and the coming exile to Babylon
Revelation: Another reference to OT idolatry

Part 5D Worship of The Beast and the Dragon

The worship of of the beast in Revelation
Revelation 13:1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems
on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.
2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bears, and its mouth was like a lions
mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority.
3 One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth
marveled as they followed the beast.
4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast,
saying, Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?
8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the
foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12
It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence, and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship
the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.
15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even
speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.
Vs1 The beast rose from the sea
Vs2 The dragon gave the beast its power, throne and authority
Vs3 The earth followed the beast

Vs4 The people worshipped the dragon and they worshipped the beast
Vs8 All the earth will worship the beast
Vs11 The second beast spoke like a dragon
Vs12 The second beast makes the people worship the first beast
Vs15
Revelation 14:9-11 And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, If anyone
worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand,
10 he also will drink the wine of Gods wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be
tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these
worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.
Vs9 Consequences for worshipping the beast
Vs10
Vs11 The worshippers of the beast are in a smokey torment
Revelation 16:2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores
came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
Vs2 The people who worshipped the beast and its image had sores.
Worshipping the image of the beast may be idolatry
Summary
I take the passages in Revelation 13, 14 and 16 to be referring to Satan as the dragon, and the beast as something
opposing to God. The people worship the dragon, they worship Satan. This is not idolatry however it is following,
worshipping, respecting and admiring sin which is directly contrary to God.
Jesus and Worship on Earth

Part 6A People Rightly Respectfully Worshiped Baby Jesus:

As confirmed previously Proskyneo/G4352 is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word Saha/H7812.
In 4A/ 4B/ 4C/ Godly people rightly bowed down, served, and worshipped/Saha other people which was not
idolatry or sinful. In 5A/ Just as in the OT, Jesus has confirmed that it is perfectly acceptable to bow
down/worship/Proskyneo another human being. Now, at Bethlehem, people had come to
worship/Proskyneo/G4352, the baby Jesus.
Mathew 2:2 Wise men came from the East came from Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has
been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship (Proskyneo/G4352) him."
G4352 Proskyneo: NT word count 60: Worship/ing/ers/ed 54, also knelt, kneeling, bow, fell, imploring
The kings came to worship Jesus as King of the Jews. If this were written in Hebrew it would say that the kings
came to Saha/H7812 Jesus. Just as in the OT there was nothing wrong with people coming to worship a person of
honor and showing them respect and reverence and bowing down to them. There was no idolatry and no sin to do
this to a human being.
Mathew 2:8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as
you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship (Proskyneo/G4352) him."
King Herod wanted to come and worship Jesus. Herod wanted to come and show honor and respect as it was
customary to do in those times to a person of high standing. Herod did not think a baby was the LORD God.

Mathew 2:11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and
worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold
and of incense and of myrrh.
The kings found Jesus and worshipped him
Summary:
The wise men, or kings, came and worshipped the baby Jesus. This is similar to the way people offered honor and
respect to people in the OT. There was no idolatry and there was no sin. The wise likely also acted the same way to
King Herod when they went to see him.

Part 6B God Wants the Angels to Worship Baby Jesus:

God wants all the angels to worship the baby Jesus.
Hebrews 1:6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels
worship (Proskyneo/G4352) him."
This could be quoting either of these two verses
Psalm 97:7 All worshipers of images are put to shame, who make their boast in worthless idols; worship
him, all you gods (Most translations say all you gods the DR says all you angels)
As this is written to worshippers of idols, it seems difficult to believe the Hebrew writer would use this verse
Deuteronomy 32:43 Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of
his children and takes vengeance on his adversaries.
Bow down to him all gods is not in the Hebrew text and doesnt show in the NIV or the NKJV.
Both OT passages say all you gods although apparently the Septuagint says all you angels
Regardless, him each time refers to God.
The angels, in Hebrews 1:6, were told to worship Jesus when Jesus was born at Bethlehem. People were already
doing the same.
Jesus and the angels were alive in heaven before Jesus came to the earth. If the angels thought Jesus was God they
would not need to be told such a thing. They were told to worship Jesus because they were not doing it before that
point.
Summary:
All angels are instructed to worship Christ, perhaps quoting Dead Sea Scrolls Deuteronomy 32:43
To say that because God tells the angels to worship Jesus implies Jesus is God has no support. Just as there was a
point Jesus was given all authority, was made Lord, was made Christ etc there was this point when all angels should
worship Jesus. Before each of these points it didnt apply therefore Jesus is not God.

Part 6C People Worshipped Adult Jesus With Requests

When Jesus was a grown man people came to Jesus and, as a man of honor and respect, asked him for help.
Mathew 8:2 And behold, a leper came to him and knelt (Proskyneo/G4352) before him, saying, Lord, if
you will, you can make me clean.

The leper was doing what all people had done in the OT times, he had Proskyneo/Knelt before Jesus as a sign of
respect and had asked him for help.
Mathew 9:18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt
(Proskyneo/G4352) before him, saying, My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and
she will live.
19 And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples.
The ruler came and Proskyneo/knelt before Jesus as a sign of respect and asked him for help
Mathew 20:20 then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling
(Proskyneo/G4352) before him she asked him for something.
21 And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one
at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.
22 Jesus answered, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to
drink? They said to him, We are able.
23 He said to them, You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant,
but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.
Vs20 The mother of James and John, Proskyneo/kneeling before Jesus as a sign of respect and reverence, asks Jesus
for a favor.
Vs23 Jesus says he is not able to grant the request, therefore signifying that he the authority he has only extends to
the heavens and earth and not the Day of Judgment and that period even though it is after he has ascended into
heaven.
John 9:37-39 Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."
38
Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him.
39
Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will
become blind."
After being healed, the blind man worshiped Jesus. Jesus did not stop people worshipping him as it was an
expressive act of reverence just as Abraham and others had done in the past. Just as King David had told the people
to worship him as the King in (4A) 1 Chronicles 29
Summary:
Mathew 8 The leper Proskyneo/knelt before Jesus as a sign of respect and honor and asked him for help
Mathew 9 The ruler came and Proskyneo/knelt before Jesus as a sign of respect and asked him for help
Mathew 20 The mother of James and John Proskyneo/kneeling before Jesus as a sign of respect and reverence asks
Jesus for a favor. Jesus says he is not able to grant the request, therefore signifying that he the authority he has only
extends to the heavens and earth and not the Day of Judgment and that period even though it is after he has
ascended into heaven.
John 9 After being healed, the blind man Proskyneo/worshiped Jesus.
All these examples of proskyneo are done in a similar way to the people who offered honor and respect to people in
the OT. There was no idolatry and there was no sin.

Part 6D Disciples Worshipped Adult Jesus After Amazing Miracles

The disciples, like the wise men, worshipped Jesus after he had done something remarkable and miraculous.
Mathew 14:33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him, saying, "Truly you are
the Son of God."

Jesus has just been walking on the water to the disciples who were fishing, Peter had done the same to a certain
extent. The disciples worshipped Jesus knowing he the Son of God. Finally they believed that Jesus was more than
just a man, he had come from heaven, he was and is Gods Son.
This would be a point where the disciples would say truly you are God if they believed it, however there is
nothing to signify that they thought this. If they believed such a thing they would have said truly you are the Godman, you are God in the flesh or something similar. They did not think this, what they thought they expressed.
Truly you are the Son of God.
Mathew 28:9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and
worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him.
Jesus rises from the dead. Mary and Mary two of the women disciples after looking at the tomb found Jesus and
worshiped, Proskyneo/G4352, him
Mathew 28:17 When they saw him, they worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him; but some doubted.
Jesus rises from the dead. The disciples Proskyneo/worship Jesus
Luke 24:50-52 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed
them.
51
While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
52
Then they worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352) him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.
53
And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Vs51 Jesus was taken up to heaven in the middle of a blessing
Vs52 The disciples Proskyneo/worshiped Jesus
Summary:
Mathew 14: Jesus walks on water and the disciples Proskyneo/worship him
Mathew 28: Jesus rises from the dead and the two Marys Proskyneo/worship him
Mathew 28: After Jesus has risen from the dead the disciples Proskyneo/worship him
Luke 24: During a time of blessing, Jesus was taken up to heaven and the disciples Proskyneo/worshiped him
The disciples and others worshipped, Proskyneo/G4352, Jesus after he had done something remarkable and
miraculous just as others had done in the OT to people they showed honor and respect. This was not a sin, not
idolatry as biblically defined earlier, and scripture does not say that they thought Jesus was God. If I had seen any
of the miracles listed here I would certainly want to show honor and respect in the highest way possible, I would do
the same.

Part 6E Jesus Worships God and says worship God not Satan:
Jesus has a discussion with Satan and tells him to worship God.
Jesus also worshiped God, why would he do this if he is God? He did, because he isn't.
Mathew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the
world and their glory.
9 And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.
10 Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.
Satan asks Jesus to worship him, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:13 and tells Satan to worship God.

What was happening? There are three options

A/ Jesus who was not God, as the Son of God was rebuffing Satan who was tyring to persuade him to leave God
B/ Jesus hid from Satan that Jesus was God. Satan did not know that Jesus was God.
C/ Satan knew Jesus was God but didnt show it for some reason. Satan was trying to persuade God. For some
unknown reason Jesus did not say worship me I am God
Answers:
A/ Satan knew who Jesus was, that he was the Son of God now born into a human body. For this reason Satan was
trying to tempt and persuade him to leave God and worship him in place of God.
B/ Satan was not mistaken or confused. There is no record of Satan ever coming to the conclusion that Jesus was or
is God.
C/ The thought that Satan knew Jesus was God and he was going along with some kind of ruse is also an extremely
far fetched notion. Would Satan try to tempt and persuade God to worship Satan? No. Satan, one of the most
powerful beings in creation, made no mistake.
The correct scenario is A, the other possibilities are not correct or even something to consider. Satan knew that God
had sent Jesus, his son and messenger, to the earth and Satan was trying to persuade Jesus to leave God and follw
Satan. Satan called Jesus the Son of God because that is who he was and is. Satan had known the "Son" since
before creation and was now trying to persuade him to defect and worship him.
Luke 4:8 Same as Matthew 4:10
John 4:22-23 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we (Ego/G2249) worship
(Proskyneo/G4352) what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
23
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and
truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
G4299 ego: ESV word count 127: we 123, ourselves 3, us 1
Vs22 Jesus said we worship which shows that he worshipped another. This is a pivotal scripture.
He then states true worshippers worship the Father. Jesus instructs us to worship God not Jesus.
We worship shows that Jesus included himself with the people of the earth in worshipping God
How can Jesus worship God and be God? He cannot and does not according to scripture.
Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and
so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,
The author of Hebrews tells us to worship God
We will receive it from God, just as Jesus received it from God
Summary:
Mathew 4 Satan asks Jesus to worship him, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:13 and tells Satan to worship God.
Luke 4 Same as Mathew 4
John 4 We worship shows that Jesus included himself with the people of the earth in worshipping God.
Hebrews 12 Worship God
God and subsequently Jesus taught on many occasions that are heavenly worship is to be directed at Jehovah God
only. If Jesus were God, or a god, then he would have said worship me which he never did. What he did was to
include himself with people when he said "we worship," he worships God which God does not do!
Here we have identified that neither Jesus or Satan thought that Jesus was God, yet there are some mere mortal
human beings who oppose that viewpoint.

Part 6F Wrong worship is worthless:

What about wrongful worship?
Mark 7:5-8 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the
tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?
6 And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors
me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.
Summary:
A partial quote from Isaiah 29:13
Worship to God has to be in accordance with Gods teachings!
Jesus and Worship After the Ascension

Part 7A God wants people to bow down at the name of Jesus:

Just as God made Jesus Lord and gave him all authority in heaven and on earth, he wants people to bow down to
Jesus.
Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above
every name,
10
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow (Kampto/G2578), in heaven and on earth and under the
earth,
11
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
G2578 Kampto: The gesture of full inner submission
Vs 9 God exalted Jesus.
Vs 9 God gave Jesus the names that he has
Vs 10 God willed it that everyone shall bow at the name of Jesus.
Vs 11 Everyone in heaven and earth will confess Jesus is Lord.
All this is to the glory of God, because God wills it!
There is an in depth analysis of Isaiah 45:23 which is quoted in Romans 14:11 along with this passage from
Philippians 2:10-11 xxxx linked here. This analysis will show that these passages do not show that Jesus is God.
Summary:
There is a point before God wanted every knee to bow, which means Jesus is not God. God decided after he had
exalted Jesus to the highest place, Gods throne, that all people will bow down at the name of Jesus. God had given
Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth before time began, he made Jesus Lord, and now Paul confirms to us that
God wants us all to bow to Jesus and confess he is the Lord. All of these had points before they had happened
which therefore proves Jesus is not God who has been in this position eternally.
To say that because God wants all people to bow at the name of Jesus implies he is God is an illogical conclusion.
Two interesting points.
1/ God doesnt say for people to Proskyneo/worship Jesus.
2/ This happened after Jesus has left the earth.

Part 7B The Worship of Christ at the End of Time

The book of Revelation has an interesting passage regarding the Proskyneo/worship of God and Jesus at the end
times.
Revelation 5:6-14 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne,
encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the
seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.
8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb.
Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
9 And they sang a new song: You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten
thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders.
12 In a loud voice they sang: Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom
and strength and honor and glory and praise!
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in
them, singing: To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!
14 The four living creatures said, Amen, and the elders fell down and worshiped (Proskyneo/G4352).
Vs6 Jesus has seven spirits
Vs7 Jesus took the scroll from God
Vs8 The creatures and elders fell down before Jesus
Vs9 Jesus purchased men for God
Vs10 Jesus made the disciples to be priests to serve God
Vs11 The angels circled the throne, creatures and elders
Vs12 Jesus received power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and praise. (God already had these)
Vs13 Everyone sang to God and to Jesus
Vs14 The elders Proskyneo/worshiped. Most likely directed at both God and Jesus.
Summary:
Every creature offered praise, honor, glory and power to God and Christ, they worshipped them.
Revelation 5 at the end of time. Interestingly we have a clear interaction between God and Jesus. God is not
interacting with himself. There is a point when Jesus becomes worthy to receive numerous honors, God already had
them. Everyone praises God AND Jesus

Part 7C Do We Worship God or Christ or Both?

What do we do when we worship, who do we aim it at?
1 Corinthians 11:1-3 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I
delivered them to you.
3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and
the head of Christ is God.
Vs3 The head of man is Christ, the head of Christ is God.
Christ worships God because God is the head of Christ
We worship Christ because he the head of us.
Previously in Mathew 4:10 and Luke 4:8 Christ told us to worship God
There is no real difficulty in these statements, they easily harmonize with each other. We honor, revere, respect and
worship God as the head of Christ, we honor, revere, respect and worship Christ as the head of the Church.

Ephesians 5:23-24 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his
body, and is himself its Savior.
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Vs23 Christ is the head of the Church, I am part of the Church, I honor and worship Christ as the head.
Vs24 I am part of the Church, I submit to Christ
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both
Lord (Kurios) and Christ."
Acts 2 At some point, Bethlehem or earlier, God made Jesus Lord and Christ. Because God did this, then Jesus is at
an elevated position of honor and we as disciples should respect that postion and offer respect and worship just as
people in the OT did to their Lords. There is only one Christ/Messiah and so again we as his followers do right by
showing extreme honor, worship and respect to him.
Summary:
1 Corinthians: Christ worships God because God is the head of Christ We worship Christ because he the head of us.
There is no real difficulty in these statements, they easily harmonize with each other. We honor, revere, respect and
worship God as the head of Christ, we honor, revere, respect and worship Christ as the head of the Church.
Ephesians 5: Christ is the head of the Church, I am part of the Church, I honor and worship Christ as the head.
I am part of the Church, I submit to Christ
Acts 2 At some point, Bethlehem or earlier, God made Jesus Lord and Christ. Because God did this, then Jesus is at
an elevated position of honor and we as disciples should respect that postion and offer respect and worship just as
people in the OT did to their Lords.
There are several other focus scriptures that could be added here making him worthy of our worship, Jesus the
savior of the world, he died for the sins of the entire world, he was perfect, he is the first to be resurrected to
heaven.
We worship Christ relative to his position

Part 8 Questions
1/ Who do we worship, God or Christ or both?
While he was on the earth, Christ said to worship God alone. Now Christ is at Gods right hand we worship both
God and Christ. There became a difference between before Bethlehem and after the accension. See section 7C
2/ If we worship Christ does that make him God? No, see section 7C
3/ If we worship Christ do we sin. No, see Part 3A-B on idolatry and 4A-C on worshiping other than God.
4/ Can we worship Christ as we worship God? We have to worship Christ knowing that God created Christ and
made him Lord, therefore we dont worship Christ as God however we worship him as Lord and because God
wants all beings to do so.
5/ The angel said "dont worship me," Jesus did not say this. Why? See section 7C
6/ Peter told Cornelius - the angel told John - and Jesus told Satan to worship God only. Why can we worship
Jesus? See section 7C
7/ In Mathew 4, why did Jesus say only worship God only and then accept worship of people? Because Satan
wanted to be in place of God, which is different from Jesus viewpoint and different from the honor and respect
people showed to people. Again, we worship Christ relative to his position

Part 9 Barton Stone

Barton Stone, founder of the Church of Christ, written approx 1820 regarding accusations by Trinitarians.

Our brethren also accuse us of idolatry for worshiping the Son of God. They surely do the same; and for this
they have the example of the primitive Christians, who "call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ"--I. Cor. i:
2. They have the example of the redeemed in glory, for they all worship God and the Lamb. They have also the
example of angels, for said the Father concerning the first-begotten, "Let all the angels of God worship him"-Heb. i: 6. With such examples as these, none should blush nor refuse to worship him. If it be idolatry in us, who
is clear of it? The Scripture says, "Thou shalt worship the [80] Lord, thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
Our brethren worship the Son as the only true God; we worship the same only true God in and through the Son.
Our brethren do not believe that the Son is another eternal, distinct God from the Father; nor do we. When the
redeemed in heaven worship God and the Lamb, do they worship two beings, or but one? When the angels were
commanded by the Father to worship the Son, must they not worship the Father also? For my part, I feel free to
give praise and thanksgiving to Jesus for what he has done and suffered for me--to love him for his perfection
and goodness--to ask him for the grace that is treasured in him for sinners. But the same Jesus has taught me
that the origin and fountain of all these things, is God. "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten
Son, and with him freely gave us all things." Till it can be proved that God and the Lamb are one being, I will
imitate heaven in worshiping the Lamb, without the fear of being guilty of idolatry. But if they are two distinct
beings, they can not be supreme Gods; let those who worship both as supreme Gods, take heed lest they be
guilty of what they so unblushingly impute to others.
Summary And Conclusion
P0

OT Hebrew Saha and NT Greek Proskyneo are equivalent words used to describe behavior showing respect,
supplication, homage, reverence, to either God, gods, demons or people

Old Testament
P1A Bow down from Saha/H7812.
The OT people were told to bow down to the LORD God
The OT people were instructed to not bow down to other Gods or gods
Do not, Saha/H7812, other elohiym or el
P1B

Serve from the Hebrew word Abad/H5647

The OT people were told to serve God only
The OT people were told not to serve other gods
Jesus confirms this in the NT

P1C

The OT word Saha/H7812 is translated worship here and bow down in other passages shown in 1A.
The OT people were instructed to worship the LORD God
The OT people were instructed to not worship, Saha/H7812, other false gods or they would perish

P2A

Worshipping God had to be done in a specific way in the OT

P2B

The God of the OT said he will destroy people who worship other gods

P3A

Isaiah 40 The idol is a handmade casting in gold and silver, perhaps wood.
Isaiah 44 The god is an idol. The god is made of wood
Acts 7 The people rejoiced in the idol, the work of their hands.
Chron 33 The carved image is a man made fabrication of a god, an idol, that does not exist.
The people falsely believe the carved image to be a representation of an invisible being.
Deut 32 The idols of gods who are no gods.
1 Cor An idol has no real existence. So called gods, do not really exist. There is only one real God, LORD
God.

No scripture says that a human being or angel is an idol.
P3B

Idolatry is clearly a sin

P3C

Depending on which translation we use for Ephesians 5:5 someone who is greedy or covetous may be an
idolater. Because there is doubt and no other support, for the time being the OT definition stands and being
greedy is not not included in the definition. Even if we do include it, the fact that we might worship Jesus
in some way does still not constitute idolatry because Jesus is not greedy or covetous!

P4A

Abraham, Jacob Leah, Joseph, Rachel, Davids assembly who were all Godly people all respectfully bowed
down, Saha/H7812, to other people. There was no sin in what they did, they were not commiting idolatry.

P4B

People rightly served other people

There was nothing ungodly about one person serving another person

P4C

The passages quoted here where people worship, Saha/H7812, other people show that it was a normal OT
behavior in order for people to show reverence, honor, and respect to another person for different reasons.
Although each of these scriptures dont usually the English word worship, the Hebrew word that bow
down is translated from is the same Hebrew word, Saha/H7812. From a word count of 172 Saha is
translated into worship 91 times in the OT is also translated into bow or bowed or bow down or bowed
down 49 times meaning to bow down prostrate oneself, or before God in worship. The remainder of the
times Saha/H7812 is written it is translated into prostrated, paid homage, fall down etc
People worshipped or resepectfully bowed down to other people which was not a sin in Gods eyes. There
are no commandments that say people should not Saha/H7812 to other people.
The problem lies in our current modern day definition of the word worship in which it is only directed at
God or a god, this was not the case in the Hebrew OT when they used the word Saha/H7812.

P4D

Here we see the people disobeyed God and wrongly bowed down to other gods.
These are clear cases of idolatry when people were bowing down to gods that didnt exist as defined in 3A

People wrongly worshipped other gods, which the LORD had forbidden
These are clear cases of idolatry when people were worshipping gods that didnt exist as defined in 3A 3B

P4G

So far we have confirmed the following

1A/ 1B/ 1C/ People are commanded to bow down Saha/H7812, serve Abad/H5647, and worship
Saha/H7812 God
1A/ 1B/ 1C/ God commanded people not to bow down, serve, or worship other gods.
3A/ 3B/ The biblical definition of idolatry is worshipping man made images of gods that do not exist
4A/ 4B/ 4C/ Godly people rightly bowed down, served, and worhsipped other people. This is not idolatry or
sinful.
4D/ 4E/ 4F/ People sinfully bowed down, served and worshipped other gods which is idolatry.

1C/ The Hebrew word Saha/H7812 is the Greek equivalent of Proskyneo/G4352

It is important to confirm the OT findings so far as they have a huge bearing on the second half of this study.
New Testament:
P5A Mathew 18 Jesus tells a parable of a servant who Proskyneo/implores/bows/worships to his master out of
reverence and respect
Acts 10 The man of God, Cornelius, Proskyneo /worshipped to Peter, another man of God. There is no sin or
idolatry here
Hebrews 11 Jacob bows in worship to the children of Joseph
Revelation 3 Jesus will tell the disobedient Jews to Proskyneo/bow down, to the patient disciples
Just as in the OT, Jesus confirms that it is perfectly acceptable to bow down/worship/Proskyneo another
human being.
P5B

John is told not to worship angels but to worship God.

In the same way Cornelius the centurion, a man of God, had worshipped Peter and was told not to

P5C

Acts: A reference to OT worship and idolatry by the Israelites and the coming exile to Babylon
Revelation: Another reference to OT idolatry

P5D

I take the passages in Revelation 13, 14 and 16 to be referring to Satan as the dragon, and the beast as
something opposing to God. The people worship the dragon, they worship Satan. This is not idolatry
however it is following, worshipping, respecting and admiring sin which is directly contrary to God.

P6A

The wise men, or kings, came and worshipped the baby Jesus. This is similar to the way people offered
honor and respect to people in the OT. There was no idolatry and there was no sin. The wise men may have
also acted the same way to King Herod when they went to see him.

P6B

All angels are instructed to worship Christ, perhaps quoting Dead Sea Scrolls Deuteronomy 32:43
To say that because God tells the angels to worship Jesus implies Jesus is God has no support. Just as there
was a point Jesus was given all authority, was made Lord, was made Christ etc there was this point when all
angels should worship Jesus. Before each of these points it didnt apply therefore Jesus is not God.

P6C

Mathew 8 The leper Proskyneo/knelt before Jesus as a sign of respect and honor and asked him for help
Mathew 9 The ruler came and Proskyneo/knelt before Jesus as a sign of respect and asked him for help
Mathew 20 The mother of James and John Proskyneo/kneeling before Jesus as a sign of respect and
reverence asks Jesus for a favor. Jesus says he is not able to grant the request, therefore signifying that he
the authority he has only extends to the heavens and earth and not the Day of Judgment and that period even
though it is after he has ascended into heaven.
John 9 After being healed, the blind man Proskyneo/worshiped Jesus.
All these examples are done in a similar way to the people who offered honor and respect to people in the
OT. There was no idolatry and there was no sin.

P6D

Mathew 14: Jesus walks on water and the disciples Proskyneo/worship him
Mathew 28: Jesus rises from the dead and the two Marys Proskyneo/worship him
Mathew 28: After Jesus has risen from the dead the disciples Proskyneo/worship him
Luke 24: During a time of blessing, Jesus was taken up to heaven and the disciples Proskyneo/worshiped
him
The disciples and others worshipped, Proskyneo/G4352, Jesus after he had done something remarkable and
miraculous just as others had done in the OT to people they showed honor and respect. This was not a sin,
not idolatry, and scripture does not say that they thought Jesus was God. If I had seen any of the miracles
listed here I would certainly want to show honor and respect in the highest way possible, I would do the
same.

P6E

Mathew 4 Satan asks Jesus to worship him, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:13 and tells Satan to worship God.
Luke 4 Same as Mathew 4
John 4 We worship shows that Jesus included himself with the people of the earth in worshipping God
Hebrews 12 Worship God

Jehovah God only. If Jesus were God, or a god, then he would have said worship me which he never did.

Here we have identified that neither Jesus or Satan thought that Jesus was God, yet there are some mere

To say that because God wants all people to bow at the name of Jesus implies he is God is an illogical

There are two interesting points.
1/ God doesnt say for people to Proskyneo/worship Jesus.
2/ This happened after Jesus has left the earth.

Every creature offered praise, honor, glory and power to God and Christ, they worshipped them.
Revelation 5 at the end of time. Interestingly we have a clear interaction between God and Jesus. God is not

Questions answered
Barton Stone 1820 Church of Christ viewpoint

Final Conclusion:
There is nothing wrong with worshipping other people, it is not sin or idolatry, however we must not worship
anyone or anything, including Satan, in place of God.
Because Jesus was elevated by God as Lord and Savior we must now worship Jesus because God wants us to. Jesus
is a second object of worship. Jesus is not God because of this, Jesus is not equal to God because of this.

The fact that Jesus says "we worship" in which he is including people with himself confirms any further doubt
