Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England

Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can
be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound
engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or
studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.
Finance:

finance

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
It is very Important to have a finance at the beginning of every
production. it is important to be able to afford the necessary items
to complete the production. For example, one of the main things
that the finances need to cover would be the equipment to create
the production, like: Cameras, tripods, and lighting. But, ultimately
having a finances in place allows the producer to gain the key items
which would complete their production, for example in
advertisements you would need the props as well as the item in
which is being sold to actually complete their advertisement, as well
as being able to afford a crew, and talent, it allows freedom within
the production.

Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment

Availability of personnel (size of

team; roles)
Importance
Meeting deadlines are vitally important, due to the financial
implications that missing a deadline can create. If a production did
not meet its deadline, and due to the extra time it would continue
for, this would initial more costs due to having to pay for crew,
talent, equipment, so it is Important due to keep on task and meet
set deadlines. There would also be an issue with equipment and
personnel, firstly when making schedules and deadlines, the
company have got to make sure that actually all those involved can
make the times and deadline, as well as the fact if they do not make
deadline there could possibly be an issue with the availability of the
crew, talent and equipment, this could prevent the continuation of
the production as well as cost a large amount of money. For
example, if a film missed its deadline, then it could cost the
producer thousands to continue the production for the extra time
needed.
Sourcing
No sourcing needed.
Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
It is largely important to have the right equipment to create the
production intended. The equipment that may be needed would
definitely be a Camera, dollys, and possibly cranes for rental.
Having these allows the production to be successful in what it is
trying to achieve. for example it a production needed a high up,
birds eye view having the access to a crane would be needed, so
having the right equipment to create the intended shots.
post- productions houses are very important in the whole process of
the creation of the production, as the post production suites allow
the editing people and producer watch the film come alive in that of
combining every scene together, but post production can allow
different aspects for example audio, CGI, and editing. For example
with action movies like James Bond you would need CGI like the
explosion of the buildings.

Materials:

Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because if there was no
use of your own material, the film created wouldnt necessarily be
yours. Its important to have original content due to the fact that it
makes the film content unique and un like anything else, but if you
have the continuous use of archived material it wouldnt be
perceived in the same way. Though including achieved footage in
original content, can be used, this is generally used when there is a
shot or possibly an interview that the crew could not physically get
for example a shot of space or an interview for a documentary of
someone that it dead.
Archive material would be used because it may not be physically
possible to retrieve the material needed for the production. This
may be due to many reasons, for example if you were doing a
documentary about the war, you may include archived material of
the soldiers in the trenches, or fighting. but this can also include
photos and audio, this can ultimately save a large amount of
money, not having to shoot, renting crew for example as well as
time saving due to them not having to record the footage
themselves.
Internet, now allows a lot more of freedom and saves on time of the
producers in the planning of the production. for example, years ago
the planning period would be very consuming due to not having the

Internet there would have to be conversations and letters, whereas

now it internet allows producers to find crews, materials at the click
of the button and be able to plan everything very quickly.
Audio is a very Important aspect, and its mainly about the collection
of different sounds that is needed throughout the production, and
making sure that those sounds are believable otherwise the
audience with not believe it and will then struggle believing in the
production for example in star wars the producer would need to
make the noise in which the lightsabers make, rather than just
havering a sound, they needed to make it sound believable and out
of the world for the audience to react positively to it.
A script is an important aspect of every production, as it allows the
production to flow as the crew, talent and producers can easily flow
It. It also provides direction for the talent and the crew as it has the
lines that the talent should say as well as the camera directions.
Interviews have an Importance in different productions, for example
when in a
Documentary they are needed largely, this is generally to give more
information within a production and are there to make a production
or documentary more reliable.
Costumes are there to create the mise en scene that the production
needs, as well as making the whole production it needs to
believable to an audience and costumes are a big aspect of that, for
example in Doctor Who there are loads of aliens and the doctor
himself, and all are in different costumes which will make it
believable to the audience.
Sourcing
Original material is filmed by the director but archive footage for
productions can be found at.

Locations:

Recces (Upload an example)

Limitations and risks:

Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
There is a large importance on Recces due to loads of different
reasons such as, lighting, safety, sound and many others. Location
recces allow us to explore all these reasons why a place is a good
place to shot or not. Firstly lighting Is something that is an important
aspect of each production, so if the production Initialled that the
crew had to film in a cave there would need to be preparations
would be put in place for lighting and definitely for sounds. The
location recces allow people to plan ahead, informing and showing
the information about a particular place. Distance is important to
know due to talent and crew having to travel to location and seeing
if its a safe journey. This also leaks into weather as it goes with
safety, you need to make sure that its safe to travel and safe for the
location. And cost would occur with the particular location for
example if a production wanted to rent a hall, that may cost money,
or props will cost money.

Codes of
practice and
regulation:

Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
Its important to have permission to use the location that your
intending to use. Due to the fact that

Clearances and copyright are very similar, in that they are the
opposites of each other, clearances are when you get permission to
use something like for example a song or a piece of footage you had
got permission from the artist and/or the owner/label. And copyright
is the laws the people abide by, they prevent people from taking
pieces of footage, sounds, anything from the internet or books etc.
that they do not own or have bought off of other people.
Heath and safety would come under a location recces as well as risk
assessments, the location recces of the area you will be shooting in
and within that you are made to complete a specific risk assessment
on that area, this would allow producers to put health and safety
precautions in place. So this is an important aspect of the preproduction.
Insurance would have been need, especially on equipment, for
example, on a production I did, my advertising unit, my equipment
was near a river insurance at the point would have been sensible
due to the possibility of the camera falling over, or into the water.

bodies:
Press Complaints Commission
(PCC) Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA)
Pan European Game
Information (PEGI)
Entertainment Software Rating
Board (ESRB)
British Board of Film
Classification (BBFC)
Importance
ASA is largely important, especially towards my advertising
production. Ofcom is a company that sets down rules and
regulations on all types of media within adverts, to make it save for
the public eye. I think within this is that ASA was an important
aspect as if you do follow their rules and regulations otherwise the
advert would get taken down for public safety, for example if it
displayed a negative view on a different product or included too
much sexual content.
Trade unions:

Producers Alliance for Cinema

and Television (PACT),

National Union of Journalists
(NUJ)
Broadcasting Entertainment
Cinematograph and Theatre
Union (BECTU)

Importance
PACT is a company the represents people within the industry, the
represents the rights within a work place, its important as it makes
sure the workers are being treated equally with in their work place
and the industry. For example, strikes are held by certain parties
because their rights are being met, that could be about pay as well
as how the they are treated say by hours and breaks within that
time.
