ThiscourseoffersastructuredopportunityforcurrentsecondaryschoolteachersofEnglishlanguage
artstoserveasrolemodelsandmentorstouniversitystudentswhohopetobecomeEnglishteachers
themselves.ThepurposeistodevelopthenextgenerationofexcellentEnglishteachersinpartbygiving
themaccesstothewisdomofexperiencedteacherswithvaluableadvicetoshare.
Participantsinthisprofessionaldevelopmentgraduatecoursewillinteractwiththestudentsinan
undergraduatecourseonmethodsofteachingsecondaryEnglishlanguagearts.Secondaryteachersand
universitystudentstogetherwillreadabookontheprofessionofteachingEnglishandwillengagein
onlinediscussionoftheirreading.Participantswillsharetheirowninsightsandexperiencesfromthe
classroom,shareeffectiveteachingstrategies,andgainpersonalinsightthatcomesfromreflectionon
theirdiscussionswithpeersandfutureteachers.

Toparticipateinonlinediscussionsandshareresourceswiththeuniversitystudents,eachparticipant
musthaveaccesstoacomputerwithareliableInternetconnection.
EachparticipantalsomusthaveacopyofthebookTheEnglishTeachersCompanion(4thedition)byJim

MyroleinthiscoursewillbeprimarilytofacilitatetheonlinediscussionsaswereadthechaptersofJim
BurkesbookforEnglishteachers.Withtheparticipantsexpertiseandtheneedsoftheuniversity
studentsinmind,Iwilldirectconversations,probeformoredetails,askforexamples,etc.Myintention
istoencouragerichdiscussionsothattheexperiencedteacherswillgainnewinsightswhilearticulating
theirbeliefsabouteffectiveEnglishteachingfortheuniversitystudentstoconsider,respondto,adopt
orresist,andsoon.
Iwillalsoprovidedirectiontoparticipantsinthiscourseonhowtoutilizethetechnologytoparticipate
intheonlinediscussionsandtosharetheirlessonideasorarticlesonteachingstrategies,aswellasthe
endofcourselettertotheuniversitystudents.
CourseSchedule:
Onaverage,participantswillspendonehourperweekengagedinreading;postingandrespondingto
comments(relatedtothereading)onanonlinediscussionboard;andsharingsuccessfullessonplansor
articlesonteachingstrategiesrelatedtochaptersfour,five,six,andseven.Thefinaltaskwillbeto
sharetheendofcourseletter.
