The Cholera Epidemic

Sreeram Mandava, Maxwell Phillips, Jared Ray, and Hunter Marple

Problem People dying from unknown cause throughout the city of
London.

Background Information Soho is a very dirty place with animal

droppings, slaughter houses, greasy areas, and so many more things.
People that were drinking from the brewery were able to survive the
outbreak while others that were actually drinking a glass of water were
dying. They found particle of some form of bacteria in the well water from
Broad Street. Many have died on the same street: Broad Street. Over 10,
675 died from the disease in many different states: many had different
style of lifestyles, but they drank from the well. People they lived outside
the well were experiencing death of the disease since they were drinking
the well water casually when they were living not even close to Broad
Street. There was a total of more than ten people that have died, and they
were living quite close to the well on Broad Street, and a man and kids
that drank just a cup of water from the well were getting sick and dying in
just days afterwards, which is quite a problem. Right after several deaths
of the epidemic, Lambeth Company started to provide water outside the
sewage area to try to avoid lawsuits. Snow also plotted information on a
map that showed the deaths of many people in various areas in London,
and he found that many people that were dying were living near a close
radius towards the wells.

Hypothesis Snow thought that the wells are probably contaminated with
the invisible particles of human waste that was commonly found in the
area, or it could have been in the water supply of the water companies.

Design and Carry out the experiment

The experiment to prove how the unknown disease was being caught was
going from the door to door trying to ask for what kind of water was being
supplied to the house in which they were in, and then, the person

recording the information would ask for how many have been reported
dead from the water, and you would record the information to help prove
the fact of how many people that died was because of the deadly disease.

Record and Interpret Data

From the data that he had found about Cholera, Snow was able to
conclude from his friend Whitefield that S&V Water Company supplies
40,046 houses in the town, and after checking the death counter for the
customers of the water company, there had been a total of 1263 deaths;
compared with Lambeth Company who moved their water supply up
outside the Sewage area, they have served 26,107 houses, and there has
been a shocking total of just ninety eight people, which was an
improvement in this case, and for the other water companies that have
been supplying water that have been possibly containing Cholera all this
time, there has been a total of 256,423 houses and a death total of 1422,
which would prove that many people are probably dying of the water, and
S&V Company had a total of three hundred fifteen people dying from the
total of ten thousand houses while Lambeth customers were dying at a
rate of thirty seven dying of every ten thousand houses, and while thats
true, there was a total of fifty nine people dying out of the ten thousand
houses. From this data, you can conclude that many of the people dying of
the unknown disease were customers of S&V Company, and the second
most was the other companies, and the least amount of reported deaths
were from Lambeth Company, which moved their company from the
sewage area to outside, which could have been one reason why less
people died afterwards. It also shows that many of the Broad Street
people and maybe from the other streets must have been reported with
mostly S&V Company suppliers as well.

Conclusion The conclusion of John Snow was that the probable known
cause for the unknown disease at the time was caused by the water
supply in the wells or the water supply from the water companies, which
has been provided to many people who are customers of this water, and
because of this, people have started to die of the unknown disease in a
large spread amount, which helps prove the reason why many groups of
the population were dying close to the wells and pumps of water at the
time. This also shows that the areas where the people are getting their

supplied water are contaminated with some kind of bacteria, and even
when companies moved the water supply to a different location, it did
improve, but it didnt improve as much.
