You & Your World: Communities/Change: Sustainability!

Grade 1/2!
Time: 30 minutes!

Description!
Students have begun the units of Communities (grade 1) and Change (grade 2). In addition to
thinking about needs and wants, this lesson will centre around how we keep our communities
clean, safe, and sustainable. During the morning read aloud, students will have been introduced
to the book Just A Dream. Based on this prior knowledge, students will help the teacher brainstorm ideas of what we can do as a community to help each other and the environment. What
changes over time? Is this a need or a want in communities? What can/do students do to help
the environment?!

Materials!

- Box of materials!
- Student drawings!
- Markers !
- Recycling symbol !
- Our community bulletin board (under SMARTboard)!

Before (10 minutes) !

- Students will be prompted to re-tell what they remember from the book Just A Dream. They
will be asked to make text-to-self connections about what they already know about our community environment. !
- The community that we will be focusing on for this project is the one we created as a class
which also has real-life inferences based on the real community we live in. !
- Students will make connections about our needs/wants and how they can affect our environment. Ie: We need transportation as a good and service so we can get back and to school. An
environmental impact of this is building roads and damaging the environment to do this
(Grade 1 Outcome). !

During (15 minutes)!

- During this lesson, the students will line their drawings up on the floor to see how the community it laid out. Then the teacher will take the box of materials that was brought into class to
visually demonstrate different causes that affect the environment. !

- An example: A couple of crumpled balls of paper next to the school would show that we can
waste paper and resources. Prompt students to think about ways that a community can help
solve this problem.!
- Students will understand that sustainability is the practice of using a resource so that it will
always exist. Students will learn and appreciate their role in the protection and renewal of the
environment. They should understand that taking care of the environment will help benefit
people, animals, and plants all over the world. !

After (5 minutes)!
- Students will be given time to complete their drawings of their portion of our made up community. !

Evaluation!
- Students will be assessed formatively on participation in whole group exercises, team work in
small groups, and contribution to the artistic projects. !

Differentiation!
- Fs behaviour is to be monitored using Mrs. Ks (EA) sticker chart. He will be rewarded with a
sticker to his chart when he works well during all time blocks. !
