V. An Integrative Approach1-I. UNDERSTANDING PATHOLOGY
psl DO= psl dysfxn assoc. w/ distress/impairment in fxning & a response thats not typical/culturally expected; one needs to meet the three criteria to be defined psl DO: 1) psl dysfxn 2) distress/impairment 3) atypical response Case: Judy; the girl who fainted @ sight of blood a) has: blood-injury-injection phobia; lightheaded, queasy, faint, bothered when facing blood/ blood-related situations/objects b) phobia= psl DO characterized by marked & persistent fear of an object/situation A. What is a Psl DO? abnormal beh= actions that are unexpected & often evaluated negatively b/c they differ from typical/usual beh o 1) psl dysfxn= breakdown in cog/emo/beh fxning; e.g. being terrified w/ smth you shouldnt be afraid of b/c of difficulty of drawing line b/w normal & abnormal, often considered to be on continuum/dimension rather than present/absentso just having a dysfxn isnt enough to meet criteria for a psl DO o 2) personal distress criterion satisfied if individual is extremely upset (caveat: cant define psl DO by distress alone!; e.g. some ppl enjoy the manic state so much they refuse treatment) impairment isnt entirely satisfactory; e.g. most ppl consider themselves lazy so shy that soc. fxning is impaired o 3) atypical/not culturally expected
