Pattering for Magic Squares

Instructions to create a Magic Square

1.
2.

Matrix can be 3X3; 4X4; 5X5 etc. (The matrix size will affect the magic number)
The sum of numbers in any given row horizontally and column vertically and diagonally must add to
the same number.
3. If an 3X3 matrix is chosen (like the example provided below, there are 8 combinations of the numbers
chosen to be found.
4. Determine the number of times each number of the 9 numbers is used in a given combination.
- The number used the most will be the middle number in the matrix
- The next 4 numbers used the most will be the corners.
5. To determine the magic number add all the numbers and divide by 3 since it is a 3X3 matrix.

Example:
The numbers to be used are:
5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
The sum of these numbers is 81. Divide by 3 and the magic number is 27.

The eight combinations are:

13 + 9 + 5 = 27
13 + 8 + 6 = 27
12 + 10+ 5 = 27
12 + 9 + 6 = 27
12 + 8 + 7 = 27
11 + 10+ 6 = 27
11 + 9 + 7 = 27
10 + 9 + 8 = 27

*Note* The first combination started with the largest

number added to the smallest number and the difference
supplied the middle number. Then the next largest number
and smallest number and so on. It is a pattern and follows
for any series of 9 numbers chosen for a 3X3 m atrix.
