AN AL MANN 'EXCLUSIVE

Say that a per son on your f ar left of the audience has chosen
a d esign . He or she is given a s l a t e and a piece of chalk and is
told t o draw the design and to turn t he s l a t e fa c e do wn on the lap .
Thi s person i s then asked to callout a number between 1 and 9.
The pe r son i s gi v en the book and t ol d to please turn over pages
f r om right to left t o the chosen number . Say it wa s 6 . The person

i s instruct ed to turn over six pa ges and to please no tice that all

the d esign s are di f fe r en t a s she turns the pages .

You mus t watch to make sur e that the correct number of pages
i s turned ove r . The bo ok mark is then placed in t he new location ,
the last page turned.
The book i s t aken f rom the person a nd held in the hand over
your head as s hown in Fi g . 1 , but the book i s turned end for en d
on t he wa y to anoth er person about the center of the audience.
Thi s s econd person i s asked to callout a number between 10
and 15. This person is gi ven the book and t old t o turn over pa ge s
one a t a time t o the number cal l ed , say it was 1J! And to notice
that all the d esi gns are different. The book mark is again plac ed
on the las t pa ge turn ed an d the book is closed and taken from the
pe rson . Again t he book i s handled in the same way and it i s again
t u r ne d end fo r end.
Everyt i me a number i s chos en the performer states , "Pl ease
remember t ha t thi s number was cho sen by y ou . " "It i s yo ur fr ee
cho ice ! "
You, must n ow go t o your f ar ri ght of the audeinc e with the
book a nd a slate and pi ec e of chalk and a ppr oa ch a third person .
Pe r forme r states , "Pl ea s e remember that the numbers were chosen
by t he au di en ce . The first person chose number 6 and the s econd
pe rson ch ose nu mber 1). The difference between the t wo cho sen numbers is 7 . And a gain I say it wa s the choice of the audience and
no t mi n e! "
This third per s on i s given the book and instructed to , "P l eas e
turn ove r 7 mor e pa ge s, fr om ri ght t o left. "
(Please n ote l The pages are always turned from r i ght to l eft
gi v ing the impress i on that the last page arrived at wa s totally
unknown fr om the begi nni ng . )
When t he l a st page i s turned , the de sign on this page i s
dr a wn on the slate by the person and it will be the exac t de s ign

slates and sho ws t hem t o be id enti ca l !
THE FINE PO INTS; I t i s bes t to mark the book s ecret ly at t he
bo ttom of the spine . Fi nger - naii poli sh make s a goo d durable mark .
When turning the book en d-for -e nd , it can be done in a most
natural way . Simply t ake the bo ok fr om the person s o that the top
of t he boo k will no w be c ome y our bottom a s you ho l d it close t o

FINE POINTS I Af t er the eff ect , your de s i gn book can of course

be , exami ned but do not all ow anyone to examine it mor e t han j ust a
touch . I have found ou t t hrough long exper ience t hat persons f rom
the audience wh o li ke t o examine magician's props are ho rrible
creatures . In t he ir unaati able and gree dy ques t f or a solut ion
they wi l l tear your pr op s apart looki ng f or a gimmick and do no t
care how much damage they do . A person may be a l l owed t o l ea f
through your book bu t once . Then the b ook i s retri eved and put a way .
This effect has room for many patt er theme s . You could t a l k
about Subliminal Perception and the i mpre s s i on s made on the subconscious mind as the book of des igns is leafe d through befo r e t h e
audi~nce . Or you can s peak about t h e Sync hron ici ty of Coi nci dence
or jus t plain Thought Cont rol !
The final e ffect t ha t you are tryin g to create in t he mi nds
of your audience is that a design was chosen , apparently through
the gui de of some unknown force , t hen other members of t he audience
kno wi ng i n t h e ir subconscious minds where the de sign ' s duplicate is ,
have c hosen the correct numbers to arrive farther on in the book a t
the co r rect duplicate !
DEFINITIONS I
