Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sandi Toksvig, Katherine Ryan,

Miranda Hart, Lena Dunham, Viv Groskop, the list goes on. At the moment we
are experiencing something apparently quite unheard of in history women
who can make us laugh. And theyre kicking ass. If the Spice Girls were the
90s kind of Girl Power then these comediennes are the 21st Century kind
of Women Power. Theyre often feminist, always hilarious and becoming
the new role models for creative women everywhere.

Have I convinced you or do you feel like smashing your computer screen in half
and screaming repeatedly Why wont these sodding feminists shut up about
it already!? Either way, get yourself down to the Forum on Thurs 18th June
to see one of the aforementioned funny women, the deeply psychotic Viv
Groskop. (That was coined by the Mail on Sunday, and frankly, I cant think of
a better way to promote her).

Was that too much? Because as soon as we start talking about women
rising up in the arts, it can get a little bit scary. Equal representation on panel
shows? But women cant do comedy as well as men!
I have something to say that will blow your mind loads of male comedians
are not funny. Seriously. And actually, as a female comedian you have to be a
million times more talented than a man to even get a media career because,
you know, women arent funny. The audience tends to be immediately more
hostile to a female comic, like theyre baiting her Come on lady, make me
laugh.
But Im not here to complain about that (necessarily). In fact, Im going to use
this brilliantly terrible societal hitch in womens favour. Because theyve had
such a mountain to climb to get where they are, I would confidently state these
women are not just funny, they are downright hilarious and probably the funniest

people on the comedy circuit. Even compared to men.

This night is hosted by the Tunbridge Wells Labour Party, and more specifically
the Womens Forum. Were raising money for the local Party and raising our
profile in the area. We do exist in Tunbridge Wells and we think more people
need to know it! There are Reds and Greens in this sea of Blue, and its about
time we made some noise. If thats not enough, were also raising money for the
Domestic Abuse Volunteer Support Services in Tunbridge Wells, who provide
essential help and advice to anyone experiencing domestic abuse.

Plus, its hosted by me, that ranty feminist spoken word poet you might have
seen at a Word-Up night / talking loudly about politics in the pub / tottering
down the Pantiles looking like a street walker. (If youve got it, flaunt it, right?)
If you cant think of anything worse than this event, its probably not for you. But
if you enjoy lefty banter and poking fun at the gender binary, Ill see you there.
