Mrs.

Atkins' Classroom Management Plan

The classroom management plan will be listed on our classroom website, and a copy
of it will be sent home to parents at the beginning of the school year. Parents will be
asked to review the classroom management plan with their child and return the
bottom half with their signature. Parents are welcome to discuss any part of the
management plan if they have any comments or concerns. This is an example of what
the classroom management plan will be. (A shortened version will be sent home to the
parents.)

Policies/Procedures:
Morning Routine- The morning routine includes: unpacking their backpack,
turning in any homework, making a lunch choice, sharpening pencils, using the
restroom, and working on morning work. If a student finishes with the morning
routine early, they may work on any unfinished work, read at their seat, or
complete a challenge activity for extra behavior coins.
Morning Meetings- Morning meetings are a good way for students to work on
skills, go through a schedule of the day, and be reminded of upcoming events
or assignment due dates. Each morning, the students will have a short morning
meeting with a message from the teacher on the board. The message will
include errors (spelling, grammar, and mechanics) that the students will fix.
Students will also greet each other by throwing a ball to someone and saying
good morning. This will build a sense of community within our classroom.
Finishing Early- If a student finishes an in class assignment early and has
double checked their work, he/she is able to work on any unfinished work or
read quietly at their seat. They will also have access to challenge activities that
can be turned in for extra behavior coins towards their classroom store.
Bullying- Bullying in the classroom and school will not be tolerated. Students
are encouraged to inform the teacher of any bullying taking place. A bullying
box will be located behind the teachers desk. If a student is not comfortable
approaching the teacher, he/she may fill out an anonymous bullying paper and
put it into the bullying box.
Technology Use- Computers, iPads, etc. in the classroom are meant to be
educational tools. While using technology, students need to be working on an
assignment given by the teacher. Free technology time can be purchased from
the classroom store.

Parent-Teacher Conferences- Conferences can be scheduled with the teacher

anytime during the school year. An open door policy will be in effect.
Raising Hands- In order to minimize distractions, students are asked to use a
cue system during instruction. This cue system will be posted in the front of the
classroom.
Entering/Exiting the classroom- Students are expected to enter and leave the
classroom with respect. When entering the classroom, students are expected to
come in, sit quietly at their seats, and wait for the next instruction. Students
will remain silent while lining up to exit the classroom. Students will line up
according to number order.
Hallways- Students are expected to be silent in the hallways so other
classrooms are not disrupted.
Classroom Jobs- Each week, two students will be chosen to be the classroom
helpers. Their classroom jobs include, but are not limited to: Teacher Helper,
Paper Passer, Office Runner, Board Cleaner, Floor Inspector, Desk Checker,
Lunch Choice, Attendance Monitor, Pledge/Classroom Pledge Starter, Line
Leader, Caboose (Lights/Door), and Morning/Math Meeting Leader.
Newsletters- A classroom newsletter will be given to students on the last day of
the week. It will explain the following week's important information. Items in
the newsletter include, but are not limited to: focus board information from the
reading series, important events, and learning objectives in math.
Progress Reports- A daily/weekly progress report can be completed if requested
by the student, teacher, or parent/guardian.
Leaving the classroom- If a student leaves the classroom, he/she is required to
ask the teacher, sign out, and take a pass with them.
Water Bottles- Water bottles containing only water may be used in the
classroom throughout the day. They can be filled up during restroom breaks.
Restroom Use- Students will be able to use the restroom at scheduled times
throughout the day or by request. Students need to sign out and place their
name on the Out of Classroom board.
Reading Logs- Students are required to read 15 minutes each night (MondayThursday) as homework. Reading logs are to be completed each week and
signed by a parent/guardian Thursday night. All reading logs need to be
returned on the last day of the week (or on the students first day back if
absent).

Parent Involvement- Parent involvement in the classroom is highly encouraged.

If they have a special skill, or would like to help out, they will be instructed to
notify the teacher and arrangements can be made.
Behavior Contracts- Behavior contracts will be used as the final step in class to
improve inappropriate behavior. The slip will be filled out by the student, signed
by the parent, teacher, and student, and handed in the next school day.
Behavior contracts will be filled out during the students valuable time, and the
appropriate behavior will be discussed and practiced by the teacher and
student.

Classroom Environment:

The classroom environment is one that is positive and encourages all

students to work hard and to try their best. We are a Beehive (learning
community), and we all contribute to having a successful classroom and
school year.

Since time management is an important skill to teach students, the schedule

of the day will be displayed in the front of the room.

Brain breaks will occur as needed to give students an opportunity to relax

and refocus.

It is important for the classroom to be neat and organized. Students will be

responsible for keeping the area around their desks and where they work
clean.

The classroom is arranged in a way that most of the distraction is behind the
students. Students will be grouped in mini hives. These groups will change
every month, unless there is a need to change seats earlier. Reasonable
seating accommodations will be made at the request of parents and
students, or according to a 504 plan or IEP.

The classroom rules will be displayed in the front of the classroom where the
students have a chance to view them on a regular basis. The classroom
pledge serves as a way for students to be reminded daily to take
responsibility for their learning and their actions.

A quick weekly quote will posted and discussed on the first day of the school
week. This will be meant to inspire all students and empower them to be
life-long learners with empathy and strength. Students are welcome to
submit a quote that the teacher can use.

Our Classroom Rules

These will be completed as a class on the first day of school. The teacher will
guide the students to come up with a similar form of the rules outlined below.
All rules will be stated in a positive way.
Be Safe
Keep hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself
Walk in the halls and classroom
Be Responsible
Make good choices
Clean up after yourself
Be Respectful
Raise your hands to speak
Listen to the teachers and anyone else who is talking
Be quiet in the hallway
Be Positive
Have a You CAN do it attitude!
Be Kind
Use nice words
Help students who may need your help
Be a good friend
Be Honest
Tell the truth

Our Classroom Pledge

To encourage students to follow through with the pledge, they will create their
own version of a classroom pledge as a group and sign the bottom. It will be
displayed in the classroom.
I pledge today to do my best, in reading, math and all the rest. I promise to
obey the rules, in my class and in our school. I respect myself and others too.
Ill expect the best in all I do. Im here to learn, all I can, to try my best and be
all I am.

Incentives for Positive Behavior

Positive behavior is rewarded! I like to focus on positive behavior and
encourage it in my classroom. On the first day, students will decide what they
want to be rewarded with in addition to the list below. Behavior coins will also
help students work on math skills.
Positive behavior is rewarded by: positive calls/notes home to parents, extra
behavior coins, clipping up on the behavior chart, music during free time, and
extra free/technology time.
A clip chart will be used in the classroom to encourage good behavior. All
students will start at "ready to learn" each day. They will be able to clip up for
modeling appropriate behavior, or they will be asked to clip down for exhibiting
undesired behavior. Students will earn or owe coins depending on where they
are on the clip chart at the end of the school day.
Awesome= earn 3 pennies
Good Job = earn 2 pennies
Ready to learn = earn 1 penny
Slow down = owe 1 penny
Stop = owe 2 pennies
All students can also earn extra behavior coins throughout the day. It is their
job to make good decisions so they can keep their behavior coins. On Fridays,
students can add up their coins then purchase items from the Classroom
Store (e.g. pencils, markers, puzzles, erasers, etc.) They are also able to

exchange their lower value coins for a coins with a higher value and save them
for more expensive items.
Coins can be earned for the following:
Participation (e.g. during classroom discussions and classroom jobs)
= Penny
Nice (e.g. to another student or adult) = Nickel
Determination (not giving up on a challenging assignment) = Dime
Quality (Assignments completed with excellence) = Quarter
To encourage good behavior outside of the classroom, students have the
opportunity to earn bees. For every compliment outside of the classroom (e.g.
in the halls or at specials), the students get to move a bee into the beehive.
Once all the bees are inside the hive, they have earned a class party (e.g. a
Popsicle or Board Game Party.)

Consequences for Negative Behavior

1. Administering a private cue or verbal warning to the student.
2. If an additional warning is needed, the student will clip down on the
behavior chart .
3. The student will be given a behavior contract and clip down to the lowest
level. A meeting will happen between the student and teacher to discuss
the inappropriate behavior. Students will practice the correct behavior
during his/her valuable time. The behavior contract will be signed by the
student, teacher, and parent.

Depending on the severity or consistency of the offence, involving the

principal might be necessary. The principal will decide the appropriate
action after speaking with the student and teacher.
Parents will be informed of any severe offence or any offence that
becomes consistent. It is important for the parents and teacher to work
together to improve inappropriate behavior.

These strategies will be used to discourage inappropriate behavior:

Proximity interference

Nonverbal cues (e.g. adjusting the items on the childs desk or a

special hand signal)
Using the student's name as part of the lesson
Effective questioning (e.g. asking the student a question he/she
is able to answer to regain attention)
I messages- (e.g. "I like the way _____ is raising his/her hand.")
