Walk though the front door and you are taken down a hallway
with glass on both sides. One side separates the town of Estes from
MedX and the other side separates MedX from me. It is the first day as
an intern for MedX of Estes Park and it went wonderfullysome would
say without a hitch. We started out with a tour of the facility and had
an info session with Jennifer Newhouse the site coordinator for the
incoming interns. Some of the stuff covered in the info sessions was
expectations, dress code, grading structure, opening and closing
procedures, along with a laundry list of other administrative things that
we needed to know. Imagine A large rectangle with a free weight room
on your left, two circuit training routs in front of you, a cardio corner,
Stretch machines against the back wall, Two rooms behind the back
wall one being an exercise room and the other a spin type of room
with many stationary bikes. We took a break for lunch at 11:00am and
where told to report back at 1:00pm in exercise clothing. Upon
returning to MedX after our lunch break we met the owner Bryon who
brought us though the administrative parts of making a folder and lead
us though how to make a folder for ourselves where we can track our
progress and get stronger. He guided us though two circuits that where
blue and yellow. Each had its own machines with its own unique
mechanics. What was eye opening for me was the technique of
pinning...this method works best when someone has an inability to
complete the full ROM (range of motion) so we would pin the bar that
goes though the weight higher so that the resistance would be negated
in the uncomfortable ROM. Among other things we learned about how
MedX puts customer service above all else in there philosophy. When
someone is doing something wrong or drops the rack of weights it is
seen as a MedX problem for not educating the client on the full aspects
of the machine or putting too much weight that the client couldnt
handle. Overall I ended up working six hours and discussed a little bit
as to the contents of my IDEA final project will be for MedX with
Jennifer Newhouse. I am in the brainstorming stage as of now just

throwing some stuff out. Jennifer will get back to me within the next
two weeks about what they need and what I can do.

Today was death! we woke up early for an 8am spin class or as
they called it Cardio Wheels". The class was taught by an instructor
hired by MedX and she worked us to exhaustion within the hour time
slot the class was allotted. The day did not stop there. We then
proceeded to discuss with Jennifer (site coordinator/supervisor)
Exercise prescription to special needs populations such as those who
have been diagnosed with arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and osteopenia, parkinsons &
multiple sclerosis, pregnancy, stroke and head injures, and finally we
went over weight loss. After the info session we walked over to the
senior center where we would learn from Debby (the co-owner) about
the class that she teaches every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The
senior center class focuses on full body movement. They do aerobic,
strength, and balance as their core structure. The class lasts for 45 min
and by next week the inters will be teaching the class on there own.
Upon return to MedX after our lunch break we looked at the Lumbar
extension machine. It was an electronic way to see how strong our
lower back really is. The machine uses a computer to read out your
maximum force exerted in lb/ft/body weight. The ratio was then
compared to population norms so we could see how we staked up
against other people our age. After that we where told to max out on
reps for every machine on the blue and yellow circuits. Byron, told us
to make our RPE 10. As far as my project goes I have given them the
idea of updating there website and making it current with the new
staff. I havent herd back as to the progress of that idea from Jennifer
but she said she would be back to me ASAP. Today I worked 7.5 hours.

We started work at 9:00am and Bryon took us on a trip to discuss
high altitude training. We drove though rocky mountain national park
to Trail Ridge Rd. Once we reached our destination at about 10,500ft
we stopped the car and headed on foot to a closed off road where we
would begin our interval training. We would walk for 60sec and then
light jog for 60 sec for 10 cycles. once we reached the altitude of
11,150ft we took Oxygen Saturation of our blood and compared it to

the base line when we were in MedX. When at elevation my oxygen

saturation went from 99% to 82%. While we were walking down the
summit we discussed further what the general adaptations where for
altitude training and why some of us felt like vomiting. Once we where
back into the town of Estes Park we had lunch with the DPT Patrick and
the PTA Kara where they discussed their expectations of the interns.
Once lunch was over we went further into the business side of MedX
and learned how to do the front desk stuff as well as cleaning the
machines and oiling them up. We also got cleaning duties and our
schedule for next week. Tomorrow me and one other intern will watch
the floor from 8:30 to 10:45 where we will then go to the senior
center and teach a aerobics class to the patrons. Today I worked 8hrs
and the project still has not come into play quite yet. Byron, Patrick,
and Jennifer are discussing what would be good for me to do for their
company.

The interns where split up today into groups of two. My group
started work at 8:30am and worked the floor till 10:30 where we split
and go to lunch and to the senior center and lead a class which lasted
from 11:00am-11:45am. When we came back I took my lunch break
then from 2:00pm to 4:00pm I worked the floor.
Monday June 1, 2015
Today I opened MedX at 5:30am and got off of work at 2:00pm.
For opening I have to fold the towels and hand towels for the spray
bottles so the machines can be cleaned. We select the music and write
something on the front white board for the day. From 5:30am-9:30am I
assisted with exercise perception of patrons of MedX. At 10:45am, after
my lunch break, I helped my fellow intern John at the Senior Center
Tri-Fit class. Which on Wednesday I will be leading and on Friday both
John and I will be leading. After the Senior center I went back to MedX
and did maintenance which included, vacuuming the Front area, office
space, Free weight room, both men's and womens bathrooms, and
wiping down all of the equipment in the facility. These will change
depending on the day. Tuesdays and Thursday we do more specific
tasks with cleaning because it is less busy.

my lunch break, I had a meeting with Bryon who thought us more
about the philosophy of MedX and how to use the equipment and why
they are designed the way they are. After the meeting with Bryon, the
owner, I went back to maintenance which included, vacuuming the
Front area, office space, Free weight room, both men's and womens
bathrooms, and wiping down all of the equipment in the facility. Since
it was Tuesday I wet mopped the free weight room and the foyer.

that you dont know and leading them for the first time in things that
they have been doing for over 9 years. Debbie the instructior was right
next to me which helped to calm my nerves. The 45min class went
flawlessly and on Friday John and I will work up a plan for the aerobics
class. After the Senior center I went back to MedX and did
maintenance which included, vacuuming the Front area, office space,
Free weight room, both men's and womens bathrooms, and wiping
down all of the equipment in the facility. Today was also the first day I
worked with a blind patient for exercise prescription. It was notable
because the person was not born blind but rather acquired it at a
young age. Taking him though his prescription was definitely a great
experience.
Thursday June 4, 2015
Today I opened MedX at 5:30am and got off of work at 2:00pm.
For opening I have to fold the towels and hand towels for the spray
bottles so the machines can be cleaned. We select the music and write
something on the front white board for the day. From 5:30am-9:30am I
assisted with exercise perception of patrons of MedX. At 10:45am, after
my lunch break, I retuned to maintenance which since it was Thursday

I lubed all the rods in the machines so that they could run smoothly
and efficiently. Once that task was finished I ended my day with the
usual maintenance which included, vacuuming the Front area, office
space, Free weight room, both men's and womens bathrooms, and
wiping down all of the equipment in the facility. Since it was Tuesday I
wet mopped the free weight room and the foyer.
Friday June 5th, 2015
Today I opened MedX at 5:30am and got off of work at 2:00pm.
For opening I have to fold the towels and hand towels for the spray
bottles so the machines can be cleaned. We select the music and write
something on the front white board for the day. From 5:30am-9:30am I
assisted with exercise perception of patrons of MedX. I lead four new
clients though our circuits and showed them how to use the machines.
Being able to work directly with the client was a new thing for me. Jen
(intern coordinator) helped me with the first two but after that she
trusted me enough to go at it alone. At 10:45am, after my lunch break;
I helped my fellow intern John at the Senior Center Tri-Fit class. Which
on Wednesday I will be leading and on Friday both John and I will be
leading. After the Senior center I went back to MedX and did
maintenance which included, vacuuming the Front area, office space,
Free weight room, both men's and womens bathrooms, and wiping
down all of the equipment in the facility.
Monday June 5, 2015
Today I lead the senior Tri-Fit class at the senior center with
fellow intern Sam as an opening to my shift at MedX. This shift starts at
10:45-8:00pm. From there I went back to MedX and worked the floor
and helped with exercise prescription. I worked with a client who had
questions about muscle rolling and other the benefits of static
stretching vs. dynamic. Once I was done with the floor I preceded to
move on to closing duties which include: gathering trash, checking
toilet paper, wiping sinks and counters, wipe down all the machines,
lowering the blinds in the P.T. office, turning off computers and
thermostats, Laundry, re-filing all work out charts, vacuuming all floor
areas, locking the doors, and finally turning off the lights.
