Elementary School
Breakfast Programs in
Nanaimo
By Isabelle Poulin

Issue
The rate of child poverty and
lack of proper food/nutrition
right here in Nanaimo in our own
elementary schools.

There are twenty-nine elementary schools in School District

68.
Fifteen of these schools have formal or informal
breakfast/lunch programs.*
Six of these fifteen schools are Breakfast Club of Canada
sponsored.
Though this sponsorship helps greatly, it doesnt even begin
to cover the expenses these programs need to be successful .

+
Other sources of funding:

Private donations

Food company donations for example Minute Maid

Juice and DANONE yogurt

Service clubs

*** School budgets Community LINK and regular

budget

A child that comes to school

hungry is more likely to have
behavioural problems, is less
likely to be attentive to whats
going on in the classroom. So
+not only are they not learning
but they are disrupting what
occurs in the rest of the
classroom
- Dr. Paul Hasselback,
Medical Health Officer

+Kids need food to be able to learn.

The school budget is already stretched. Adding a
breakfast program further strains the budget.

My project:
A fundraiser to raise money and awareness
towards this need.

+
My Plan
To create a poster campaign to raise awareness.
To plan a community pancake breakfast with
various fundraising activities like raffles and silent
auction. I plan to invite important members of
our community. This will raise money and
awareness as well as help the community come
together to support each other.
