In1897arancherlookingforcattlethathadstrayedfromaherd,madeasurprisingdiscovery:theancientcliffdwellingsinColorado.Thespectacularbuildingsand
artifactsweretangibleevidenceofanadvancedcivilizationthathadlivedintheareaanddisappeared.Inthefollowingyears,moregreatdiscoveriesweremadeassimilar
structureswerefoundinUtahandArizona.
Theincrediblediscoveriesbaffledresearchersandhistorians,buildingsthathadneverbeforebeenseenorimaginedintheregionwerefound,buildingsthatsupportofup
tofivestorieswerediscovered,somethingthatwasconsideredunusualfortodaysarchaeologists.Oneofthestructuresatthearchaeologicalsite,whichlaterwouldbe
calledPuebloBonito,containsover650rooms.

AtChacoCanyon,researchersdiscoveredadozenofhugecomplexesthatincludemorethan300perfectlycircularstructures.Butjustwhatwastheirpurpose?Thewalls
arecoveredwithpaintingsandmysteriousinscriptions.ThediscoveryofChacoCanyonisanunprecedentedfindinginAmerica,researchersfirmlybelievethatnothing
foundcanbecomparedtothemightofChacoCanyon.Archaeologistswereamazedbythewealthofpottery,weapons,tools,jewelryandeverysinglepieceofartfound
inthevicinity.
Interestingly,20millionyearsago,ChacoCanyonwasthecenterofalargeSea.Aftertheseawithdrew,theonlythingthatwasleftwasaparcheddesert.Withoutwater,
theprimaryelementforlife,howcouldthisancientcivilizationhaveflourishedintheregion?Andmostimportantly,whywouldtheybuildtheircitiesinsuchalifeless
