1. A City
A city is a human settlement, consists of residential areas for human to live within,
commercial and industrial areas for job opportunities. A city also consists of education
centers, art and cultures, healthcare centers, public administration, recreational areas,
religious centers, agriculture areas, transportations, infrastructure areas and community
buildings.
2. Investigation on Better City Guidelines and Issues
A better city is a city that is environmental friendly, efficiently used water, power,
transportation, building, materials and lands. Mixed zoning laws allow residents to
work and play closer to home. Moderate usage of materials.
Other characteristic of a better city:
- Mobility
- Reusable energy
- Proper sewage system
- Natural open space
- Proper waste disposal
- Climatic architecture
- Minimum pollution
- Low noise levels
- Safe
- Affordable
- Proper infrastructure
- Organized town planning
Current city issues:
- Heavy use of chemical
- Inappropriate landfills
- Traffic jam
- Poor public transportation system
- Pollution
- High crime rate
- Wasted energy
- Squatting (Abandoned areas)
- Lack of greenery

Ancient and old cities surrounded by forests:
Machu Picchu, Peru.
- 2430 meters above sea level, mountain forest.
- Situated on a mountain ridge above
Sacred Valley.
- Located in Cusco Region, Urubamba
Province, Machupicchu District, Peru.
Terrace landscape reduces soil erosion and
prevents landslides.
Ancient Mayan City, Calakmul.

- Located in Tikal and Calakmul, Mesoamerica.
- Surrounded by forests.
Located in places that controlled trade routes

or that could supply essential products.

The present cities:
Forest Hills of New York City, USA.
- Located in New York City, America.
- An unusual sight to see from busy New York
City.
Greeneries should not be forgotten even in a
busy city.
Melbourne City, Australia.

- Located in Australia.
- One of the top city with urban forest
planning.
Having a forest in a city is good for health.

The future cities:
Bright Tree Village, Star Wars Movies.

- 50 meters above ground.
- Located in the canopy of a forest known as Happy Grove.
- Most huts hang on an individual tree, some hollowed in trunks of trees and some built
on ground level.
Huts are interconnected, good design to allow mobility of villagers.
Not named, similar to Coastal town in Sweden, Kikis Delivery Service.

- Unknown location, coastal area.
- Urban forest can be seen in the city.
Urban forests are important to city.

Build a city following the landscape design of hills and
not harming the habitats in the forest.

Aim:
Eco-friendly city and healthy lifestyle.
Facilities:
Modern tree houses (Mille Couches, Thousand Layers)
Passerelle (Transportation Floor with electric powered buggy, schindler
walkway, and Bicycle lane.
