Title of Lesson: Fact Families

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards
(2) Number and operations.
(A) Recognize instantly the quantity of structured arrangements;
(B) Use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 120 in
more than one way as so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones.
(C) Use objects, pictures, and expanded and standard forms to represent numbers up to
120
(3) Number and operations.
(A) Use concrete and pictorial models to determine the sum of a multiple of 10 and a
one-digit number in problems up to 99;
(C) Compose 10 with two or more addends with and without concrete objects;

Objective/Purpose: Find missing addends, review additive identity

Introduce Lesson:
First define what Fact Families are. What are fact families? Answer: In a fact family there are 3
numbers. The 3 numbers make 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences. A # cannot be
used twice, you must use all 3 numbers.
Now show them the fact family song video once https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsgOSrVnwM. This will help them get an idea of what they are going to learn.
Once the video ends, start working out the examples with the students. First example, the three
numbers we are using is 1, 2 and 3 and we have to make an addition equation. Make them
participate, ask questions like whats the biggest number from 1, 2 and 3? Which one is going to
be our sum? Let them answer and then go on and say that 3 is our biggest #.
What other way can we make an addition equation to have a sum of 3 other than 1+2? Answer:
2 +1
Repeat the same process with the rest of the examples.
When it comes to subtraction, we have to make 2 subtraction equations with the 3 numbers. For
the first example, you can say, What two numbers can we subtract in order to get the last
number? Youd say Were going to subtract 3 and 2.. What does 3-2 equal? Answer: 1
Once youve gotten 1, weve used all three numbers. Remind them that the only numbers being
used are the ones from the triangle.

Example:

13 6 = 7

Lesson:
After youre done with the examples, pass out the worksheet. Once youve made sure
that everyone has a worksheet, work the first problem out with the students, to make sure that
they understand what they are doing.
Remind them that the three numbers that we will be using for each problem will be in the triangle.
The largest number will be at the top of the triangle and the other two numbers will be at the
bottom. We must use all 3 numbers in one equation; a number cannot be used twice.
Once everyone has completed the worksheet, you can go over the answers with the class.

Re-Teach:
If the student did not understand the lesson, Ill ask them what it is that they dont understand. I
would give a few other examples and then go back to the first problem in the worksheet.
