Cover letter
Writing this essay was not as easy as I expected. First, I wrote down everything I could
remember from reading the chapters from the book. I went thorough chapter by chapter to
take notes on some important ideas that Pipher is trying to say and that I can connect with. I
did freewriting for the chapters that I am going to include in my writing. Those steps went
well without any challenge. However, as usual, outlining was the hardest part for me. I pulled
out study guides and discussion I wrote for chapters from the book. It was useful and helped
me a lot in preparing outline. Then I prepared the formal outline. I organized the ideas from
the book and from my own. It was the challenging part. Sometimes it took a long time to me
to connect ideas and check if they make sense. I researched three news articles and took
notes on what I can relate to Piphers writing. After I prepared outline, I wrote my first draft.
I proofread my draft, correct grammatical errors and sentence structures. I wrote two drafts
and one final draft. I integrated the articles I researched on and some articles that I read from
Reading Critically and Writing Well. For work-cited page, I used writer reference.

Change Writing
In Writing to Change the World, written by Mary Pipher, the author addresses what
writing is for, why we write and our responsibilities as a writer. In the very beginning of the
book, she explains what writing is for to the beginner writers. Writing is to connect. It is used
as a communication tool to connect people around the world. "A writer's job," Pipher says,
"is to tell stories that connect readers to all the people on earth, to show these people as the
complicated human beings they really are, with histories, families, emotions, and legitimate
needs (Pipher 6). When we communicate through writings, we have to be able to express
our thoughts, emotions and knowledge very clearly. I agree that it is our job as a writer. We
write to bring meaning to the world, to be fully alive, and most importantly, we write to
change the world.
Writing to connect is change writing (Pipher 8). Change writing is a writing that is
written intentionally to change readers mood and point of view or unintentionally affect
readers ideas and thoughts on a subject. Phiper says All writing is designed to change the
world, at least a small part of the world or in some small way perhaps a change in a readers
mood or in his appreciation of a certain kind of beauty (21). According to her, no matter
what type or how long the writing is, if it is written to connect with people around the world,
it is change writing and it can change the world for better or worse.

The diary of Anne Frank would be a good example of change writing. Her writing
changed Phiphers view of the universe. I am pretty sure it has touched the heart of a lot of
people who read it. Through her diary, she let the world know that there are many people out
there who are hoping to get helped. Pipher also mentions about Annes essay Give. She
says that the essay is very inspirational to the readers to have an act of kindness towards all
the living creatures. Anne Franks essay and diary proved that no matter what kind of writing
it is, if it affects or inspires a readers mind and act, it is change writing.
Change writing can also be a short sentence or a phrase as long as it is effective. For
Pipher, Freedom from Fear is a piece of writing that she saw from an old man on Burmese
border has changed her perspective on writing and has made her want to write. Not all of us
are able to speak different languages; however, we have the ability to connect each other
through writing. From Phiphers experience, we can see that change writing is also an
expression of inspiring words to the world even if we cannot speak different languages.
Writing is a powerful tool to change the world.
It is more powerful when writers intension meets readers need. Some writers write book
about their ideas and thoughts on social issues with the hope of informing and sharing
perspectives with people who are also interested in social issues. For example, a book of
Martin Luther King, Strength to love, is intentionally written to transform the world for
better. The book teaches the readers that racism and inequality bring hatred and violation to
the world, but the strength to love can bring peace to the world. It is very overwhelming,
inspirational, and powerful work of a writer that has changed the mind and act of many
people towards each other. It is definitely change writing since it is written with intention to
the world in a good way.

Helpful information, which can be turned into change writing to spread world widely, can
change the world in positive aspects. For instance, environmentalists can inscribe about what
is happening in the environment to share their knowledge to the society. Since they have
prospective knowledge about environmental conversions, causing disasters to the world,
environmentalists write in order to make people aware of it. Again populations, ozone
depletion and deforestation are happening to the society because of the changes that human
beings have made to the environment. Understanding environmental pollution is issued to
publicize the environmental degradation to the society. People will aware of their actions and
will learn from it by writing and spreading information about disadvantages of developing
the world. Those kinds of writing can be regarded as the change writing.
Changing writing is sharing not only information but also feelings and thoughts of one
own. Many people have common feelings, ideas and thoughts for changing the world for
better. To change the world for better, people should have good manners, sympathy and
empathy for each other, so that people could create pace without ignorance. In the article
Black Men and Public Space, written by Staples, is an example of change writing that
shows the feeling of black men, who was discriminated as mugger and rapist and the reaction
of fear of people when they see a black man. People in those articles are discriminated
because they do not have empathy, being unable to understand another persons feelings and
experience. The articles of Black Men and Public Space change writing to understand and
sympathize the feelings of people who are prey of discrimination can change that kind of
manner.
Most of us are unaware of what are happening around the world and our knowledge is
limited and our senses are connected by the technology. We only know what the television

and technology provide us. With advancing technology, the quality having experience,
knowledge, and good judgement are declining. Piper believes that good writing enlarges the
knowledge of the readers who are with their own point of view about the world, and it
connects people to one another. Only the writers who have a deep yearning to connect, to
write things down and share their writing can provide good writing, in other words, change
writing. Those writers are change writers. Piper compares change writers to therapists who
have been described as purveyors of hope and to cultural brokers. Change writers observe
the world inside them and around them thoroughly before they write. They first need to
explore themselves deeply to produce deep and rich writing. Pipher urges writers to be bold,
honest, and know themselves really well. The clearer they know ourselves, the more
reflective and honest their writings will be.
Writing not only connects the writers with readers, but teaches the writers who they are.
The person we have become today has to do with our past. Our past colors our writings, and
we can learn who we are through our writings. When our writings reveal who we are as an
individual, they also reveal our voice. In What You Alone Can Say, Pipher says that we can
find our voice in our writings. Voice represents the writer as an individual. Like I mentioned
earlier, our past, our own set of life themes, habits and ways of organizing for our actions
impact our writings as well as our voice. Voice is what makes readers listen to a writer.
To conclude, it is individual responsibility to change the world for better. We can change
the world through writings. In order to do that, we need change writers who are willing and
able to change the world by their writing. With her writing, Pipher is trying to motivate and
inspire us to become one of the recuse teams in saving the world by our change writing.
