SAFE WORK PROCEDURES

MAINTENANCE OF EXCAVATOR BUCKETS

Key processes to be followed


Area where work is to carried out should be clear of debris, oil, welding
wire, rods, etc, which could cause a person to slip while working.
Keep work area clear of scrap, hoses and cables which could cause tripping.
Ensure adequate access to all parts of the job to be carried out.
Place bucket on stable surface in manner which will not allow it to fall.
If bucket must be above ground, place on timber dunnage or RHS.
Work stands (if used) must be designed to carry the weight of the bucket to
be placed on it, and braced to prevent twisting or collapsing under load.
Work stands must be inspected before use for evidence of damage, weld
fractures, distortion or damage.
Control access to work area to prevent bucket being moved or dislodged
while work is being carried out.
Ensure that persons working on buckets can adopt a work posture which will
minimise risk of over-exertion or strain injury.
Ensure that no person places any part of the body under any part of
bucket.
Mechanical aids must be provided and used to lift buckets, and to move or
reposition larger buckets.
Persons using welder must use all PPE required for welding work.
Welding curtains should be used where there is a risk of other persons being
affected by welding flash.
Respiratory protection must be used by persons welding inside bucket.

Packing material must be capable


of supporting weight of bucket.
Work stands must be designed to
carry the weight of buckets, and be
constructed by a qualified person.
Inspect stands before use.
Authorised persons only to be in
work area.
Provide stool or seat, or place
work on stand for longer duration
jobs.
Use crane, forklift or other loadshifting equipment.
Wear eye, hearing, and hand
protection, welding helmet, body
protection, and foot protection.
Wear P2 or gas filter respirator.

The following precautions are to be
observed, and suitable safety and
warning signs as indicated should be
displayed in areas where these
procedures are carried out.
