I am happy to report that this year has been very successful for our club so far.

Thank you to all

of you that have supported our shows, clinics and seminars by either volunteering, participating
or both! Without everyones help and enthusiasm we would not be able to offer everything we
do! The schooling shows have been well attended and we are very fortunate to be able to offer
clinics at all the summer shows--free to all members! Please take advantage of these!! The
show committee has decided to offer Prix Caprilli at the July and August shows. Please check
the website for any updates! We will be celebrating 30 years for this club next year so be on
the lookout for some special plans for our year-end banquet very soon (exciting!). We are
finishing up the first of the schooling show series this month! There will be an awards event
planned for July as well as a photo contest! We will post on the website soon.

As we move into the heat of the summer, please remember

to hydrate yourselves and your horses. The summer shows
will be held in the large covered arena at Clay County in the
evening. I am looking forward to seeing everyone this
summer. We will try to come up with some creative ways to
stay cool and have fun with our friends and horses. Dont
forget that walk and lead line have been added to our shows.
Thanks again!

Like many of you, I have a full-time job that limits my flexibility for scheduling lessons, so my time is
pretty much limited to weekends. For many instructors teaching on weekends can be problematic as
they are actively showing or judging which limits their availability for regularly scheduled lessons. To
throw another monkey wrench into the machine, I am trying to stay active in eventing, something that is
becoming increasingly more difficult to in our area as venues are disappearing and the closest folks are
found in the Gainesville or Ocala area if you drive south, or in
Aiken, SC if you drive the same amount of
time to the north. I was fortunate enough to find a local Event
instructor a few years ago, but unfortunately her full-time
career took her to the other side of Georgia. We still work
together on a monthly basis, but we focus primarily on my
jumping work. To help bring my flatwork along, she
recommended I try finding a dressage instructor.
If only finding a new instructor was a simple as using Angies
List, unfortunately to find an instructor that works best we
need something similar to an on-line dating service. First
lessons are more like blind dates, sometimes they work and
sometime they dont. Personalities, teaching and learning
styles all play in to the success between instructor and student
and it can be very disheartening when the one or two local farms do not
provide a good synergy. I moved from the Northeast many years ago, leaving behind an instructor who
was and still is my mentor on many levels. In the early years after I moved south, I would save my
lesson money to pay to bring her down for a five day boot camp. If I had training issues, she would
give me a program to follow and I would report our successes and failures along the way.
Recently, I began the quest for a dressage instructor. I was riding with someone for a while who I liked
but I found myself leaving my lessons frustrated and disappointed with my riding. As I was driving home
from my last lesson, I was contemplating what options I had. After talking with my mentor about my
disappointment, she suggested we try to schedule another trip down for her, which is something we
hadnt done for a three or four years. We knew it wasnt perfect fix, but at least she could help ground
me with a program that we could modify and discuss issues as they came up.
As an experimental pilot, I bought an inexpensive wireless security camera and a noise cancelling
Bluetooth headset for my cellphone. The camera is mounted to a tripod and situated outside of the ring
so that it sits on the centerline. Most camera companies offer an internet viewing portal when you
purchase a camera through them or you can subscribe to a website that serves dynamic IP addresses.
You have to be a little techno-savvy to set the internet portals up correctly, but my husband was able to
make it work fairly quickly. The positioning of the router is critical to ensure uninterrupted signal
between it and the camera. I wear my cellphone in a runners waist-pack. The earbud takes a little

getting used to, and if it doesnt stay as stable as youd like, you can use surgical tape to anchor it. The
prototype camera has pan and tilt functions that are remotely operated through the internet allowing
the instructor to follow the rider around the ring.
Some of the pros and cons of the system. First the cons. There is a time delay when viewing. In general,
it is a couple of seconds, but just as we have seen with other internet uses, you can run some lag issues
depending on cyber traffic. Transmit speeds associated with your equipment, distance to the wireless
router and your internet connection need to be compatible to ensure optimal performance. The camera
does need to be plugged in, so your proximity to a power source is key as well. If you need a hands-on
trainer for beginning riders, assessing young horses or feeling out the issues, then this system would
obviously not work, but for folks in a steady working program it does provide a means to check
performance. Initially, we were restricted to a smaller area of the arena (approx. a 30 m circle) because
of the maximum viewing distance of the camera. I have since moved on to a camera with a zoom
function which lets me ride my full arena (40m by 40m). Many of the cameras also have the ability to
save video footage for your review, but unless you are running your audio through the camera, which
they do have two communications, you wont be able to save the audio since it is associated with your
phone.
Now the pros. The biggest one: distance and time with a good match instructor is no longer a factor!
I ride with my mentor, 22 hours away, at 5:30/6:00 Monday evenings. Second biggest: Fairly
inexpensive as an investment. The first camera was $50, second camera was $200. We also purchased a
larger antenna to boost the cameras signal which was an additional $15. The headset was $60. The cost
of your wireless router will be dependent on how
far you need to boost your signal. We are
currently running it on a standard G router. The
camera can always double as a nanny cam or
security camera during its down time, and
companies that offer internet access portals also
provide you with viewing apps for your
smartphones. I used it one time to monitor a
mildly colicky horse from a meeting and it does
have night viewing capabilities if you have to do
foal watch. If you have an instructor that is open
to the use of technology, it can provide you and
them with more options for assessments and
lessons that minimize travel expenses if distance and time are problems.
I have been doing weekly lessons with my New England mentor since July and we have had much
success with this system. She is planning to write her own article on our use of this system from a
trainers perspective and I look forward to reading it. My horse has been progressing well using this
approach; I think his only concern is the voice in my head that has changed the difficulty of his
working program.

By Jill Amburgey

Ive heard it said that people come into

our lives for a reason bringing something
we must learn and we are led to those
who help us most to grow if we let them
and we help them in return. Well, I dont
know if I believe thats true, but I know
Im who I am today, because I knew
you.But because I knew you I have been
changed for good. You will be with me
like a handprint on my heart
- from the Broadway musicalWicked
For Good
I believe horses like people have a
purpose in our lives. If you are lucky, like
me, you will meet many horses that
forever touch your heart and lives. Today
I want to tell you about one very special
horse that has changed me for good,
Molly.
To give you a little background history for this story, you need to know that when I met
Mollys owner Michelle Velasco over 20 years ago, I was primarily a hunter jumper rider/trainer
with my husband, Steve, at a farm in Middleburg, Fl. Reluctantly, Michelle persuaded me to
take a dressage lesson here or there and occasionally ride her horses in a dressage saddle. As
much as she tried I did not budge, much. We remained friends through our differences.

In 1997, our stallion Squirt was

born and we lost his mom. We were
very lucky to find a nurse mare, Dolly, a
very large, white Percheron mare~ at
least she looked large next to our welsh
pony baby. The nurse mare contract
said we had to return her bred. Well,
long story short, Michelle was neighbor
and friend to MaryAnn - owner of a
stallion. So Dolly met Fadjura with
the agreement that Michelle would buy
the foal.
So, 11 months later Michelle
was the proud owner of an adorable
Percheron/Arab filly named
Molly. Over the next few years,
Michelle with the help of Kathy Daly
worked with Molly and started her
training. Molly had the beautiful face
of her Arab father and his intelligence.
Now, her mothers desire to eat
anything and laid back attitude was
definitely not spared on Molly.
Molly started under saddle with
Kathy Daly. When they thought she was ready to come back home, Michelle enlisted me to
help. We did our best to stay in the ring-- Molly had a distinct attraction to gates or openings in
the beginning. One of my favorite early memories of Molly is when she could not escape the
ring, she simply and methodically removed me by scraping me under a tree. That would be the
last time I came off of her. She was quite the powerhouse with a quick wit and sassy attitude.
So still not convinced I wanted anything to do with Dressage, Michelle and Molly
conspired to change my mind. For some reason Michelle decided she could not show Molly in
her intro test at the North Florida Arabian show at Jax and somehow convinced me to ride
her.Success! We survived the show and placed well with positive comments. Later, I
invested in a dressage saddle and the appropriate attire. Miss Molly and I had a great intro
career. I learned a lot from Molly, both with my riding skills and with patience.

Somewhere through all of my time with Molly, I had my two children and continued to
teach and train. I showed Molly with NFDA and enjoyed it immensely! Michelle introduced us
to the Arab show circuit and recognized shows. We did qualify one year to go to Arab Nationals
but couldnt go because Molly had suffered a serious and almost career ending injury. After
time off and rehab, we were able to bring Molly back to the show ring. We qualified for Arab
Nationals again in 2007. Once again, I almost didnt go because I found out I was pregnant with
Ashlynn. But after much thought and prayer, I decided to show and I am so glad I did! I had a
wonderful time with Michelle and Stephanie Cassidy. Molly and I were just out of the ribbons
in our training level test but she was such a good girl! We came home from that show and I
managed to show at the NFDA championships. After that show, I stopped riding because of my
pregnancy. Michelle got to ride and show Molly too! Her last show was a win at the NFDA
championships a couple of years later. Cassidy Spurgeon got to borrow Molly for a while tooshe got to be a hunter for a few
shows and got to show at the
State 4-H show. And finally,
Anna Kirkpatrick got to ride and
show Molly. They also won at
the NFDA championships at
intro level. Many of my
students got to ride and enjoy
Molly and she was very good at
making sure you knew where
your center was and where
your outside rein was! She also
introduced a few people to the
ground a little unexpectedly!
I am not sure if you all know what happened March 20 this year. My family headed to
Miami to see Wicked, a much needed and anticipated vacation for us all. About two and a half
hours into our travels, I received a call from Hannah Grimm. She called to tell me that she and
Michelle had gone to my house to ride and while there, found Molly injured. A life ending
injury I was devastated and heartbroken.
So for me, Molly was that Horse. She was the life altering, career changing Horse. She
was my friend and my teacher. She brought me to where I am today. Sometimes the pain of
losing a horse, a friend, doesnt seem worth it but I know Molly was definitely worth
knowing...loving! Because I knew her I have changed for the better and she will always live on
in my heart. Beautiful bay mare with the most soulful eyes, because of you I have changed for
good. Godspeed!
