Topic: Symbols and Dia de los Muertos

Content Standards & Correlating lesson objective
ACTFL Standard 2.1 Students demonstrate an understanding of the
relationship between the practices and perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the relationship
between symbols used on Dia de los Muertos and the perspectives on death
within the Mexican culture.
ACTFL Standard 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas in
Spanish to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Students will be able to present information on the symbols that they find
through a class website to an audience of other readers/students on the
topics that we discuss.
ACRL Standard 2 The visually literate student finds and accesses needed
images and media effectively and efficiently.
Students will be able to find and access images that are symbols related to
Dia de los Muertos. Students will be able to interpret and analyze the
meanings of the symbols they find.
Assessment(s):
The students will be formally assessed on their ability to present information

in a written form on a symbol that they have researched. This will be both an
assessment of visual literacy and writing ability in Spanish. This will be done
on a class website.
Consideration of Technology Use:
This lesson used technology in the following ways: The students are
researching symbols on a variety of websites, but have started on a
given website presented by the teacher. Students must present their
findings in written form on a class website set up specially for this
project.

Materials Needed:
Teacher:
The teacher will have the lecture material prepared. The teacher will need to
have prepared a website for the students to be able to post their findings to.
The teacher will provide the link to a website for the students to start their
search for information about symbols.
Students:
The students need to be prepared with only a pen/pencil and paper today.

Lesson Opener:
The lesson opener today is to ask the students what symbols we have at the
time of Halloween, this will be a brief discussion that we spend 2-5 minutes
on.

Summary of Lesson
What will teacher do?
The teacher will talk about Dia de
los Muertos and give a very basic
introduction to the holiday.
The teacher will address the fact
that it is very different from our
holiday Halloween, even though
they happen on nearly the same
day and share some symbols.

What will students do?


The students will take notes on some of
the differences in the cultures of Dia de
los Muertos and Halloween.
The students will research the given
symbol that they are assigned and post
their findings to the class website.

The teacher will give the students


an assigned symbol to research.
The teacher will provide a slip of
paper to each student with the
website where they can start their
search about symbols, and the
class website URL where they can
post their findings.

Closure
The students will be asked to look at the findings of at least two other
students, and then do a little research about that symbol and try to find if the
person missed any information.
