Topic: Colors and their meaning

Content Standards & Correlating lesson objective
ACTFL Standard 4.2 Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of
culture through comparisons between Hispanic cultures and their own.
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of the concept of colors
and their relevance to the culture experienced for Dia de los Muertos;
additionally, they will be able to compare this to their own culture.
ACRL Standard 2 The visually literate student finds and accesses needed
images and media effectively and efficiently.
Students will be able to find images of sugar skulls that they can use to color.
Assessment(s):
Students will be informally assessed on their ability to find a sugar skull that
they can use to color and present to the class. Students will be formally
assessed on their presentation that they give to the class based on the
coloring of their sugar skull.
Consideration of Technology Use:
This lesson used technology in the following ways: The students are
finding a pattern to use for a sugar skull and will need to print it off so
that they can color it.

Materials Needed:
Teacher:
The teacher will have the lecture material prepared about colors. The teacher
will to have gotten access to the library for printing the images. The teacher
will need to have prepared the prompt that gives students help in writing
their presentations. The teacher will also need supplies for coloring the sugar
skulls.
Students:
The students need to be prepared with only a pen/pencil and paper today.
Lesson Opener:
The lesson opener today is to ask students what they know about the
emotions that are tied to colors in our culture. This will lead into our
discussion of the emotional meaning of colors in Mexican culture.

Summary of Lesson
What will teacher do?
The teacher will lecture about the
meaning of different colors in the
Mexican culture.
The teacher will present some
images with sugar skulls on them
and discuss with the class what
emotions are evoked based on how
they are colored.
The teacher will give the students
the assignment to find their own
pattern of a sugar skull on line.
The teacher will provide the
material needed to color and
prepare the sugar skulls for
presentation tomorrow and the
prompt that will help the students
to prepare a spoken presentation.

What will students do?


The students will take notes on some of
the different meanings that colors have
in Mexican culture and participate in
discussing the differences.
Students will discuss the images
presented and what emotions are
evoked for them, as well as talking
about what those might evoke for a
person celebrating Dia de los Muertos.
The students will find images of sugar
skulls to color and present to the class
tomorrow.
Students will use the prompt to prepare
their presentation for tomorrow.

Closure
The teacher will ask the students what their impressions are so far of the
holiday Dia de los Muertos and how it compares to Halloween.
