Learning objectives:To measure the amount of fats in the food

1.

Research Question: Which type of chocolate has the highest amount of fat?

2. Hypothesis: Milk chocolate will have the most highest amount of fats.Based on
our calculation, Milk chocolate contain 3.5 fat per gram while the others are 0.4 and 2.7

Dark Chocolate (15 g)


Milk Chocolate (15 g)
White Chocolate (15 g)
Acetone (20ml)

Materials :

4. Method
1. So first we count the weight of the chocolate by 5 gram
2. Put the chocolate into a beaker, and then weigh the chocolate and the beaker.
Record the data in your notebook.
3. Then chop the chocolate into little pieces
4. Pour acetone by10 ml into the measuring cylinder,then pour it in the beaker with the
chocolate
5. Stir the beaker with a stirring rod for 1 minute
6. Then pour the liquid with the fats into a petri dish.Make Sure the chocolate stay in the
beaker
7. Let the liquid on the petri dish and the chocolate in the beaker glass dry for a night
8. Weigh the beaker,if the weight is just same or even more put the beaker in the oven
record it in your notebook Repeat the step 1 until 8 up to 3 trials.

6. Data Interpretation
A. According to graph one milk chocolate contain the highest amount
of fats. According to graph two dark chocolate contain the less
B. The amount of fat you need each day depends on the calories you
you need each day. Institute of Medicine recommends adults to consume
between 20 to 30 percent of their daily calories from fat . According to the U.S,
Department of Agriculture, adult men need 2,000 to 3,000 calories, while woman
need 1,600 to 2,400 calories each day (healthyeating.sfgate.com)
C. Eating too much fat causes obesity, low nutrition, HBP and High
Cholesterol;

7. Validity of Hypothesis
Our hypothesis is wrong because our conclusion is that White Chocolate has the highest
amount of fat while Milk Chocolate has the lowest amount of fat.

8. Validity of the Method.

Strength:
1. We had three trial of the experiment
2. We had good amount of chocolate and acetone to do the experiment
Weaknesses :
1. Sometimes the acetone did not dry yet so it needed to be put in the oven again.
2. When we want to pour the acetone into the petri dish, sometimes the food came
with the acetone, so its hard to only got the acetone.
3. the percentage of the water is bigger than the pure acetone. so it cannot be
evaporated just by putting it in the chamber, but you needed to place it in the oven too.

9. Improvements
1. We should measure with the same beaker.
2. Use a higher concentration of acetone, thus there will be less water in the
solution and easier for the solution to dry
