Objectives

Grade: 6th Grade

6.b.11 The student applies mathematical process standards to use

coordinate geometry to identify locations on a plane. The student is
expected to graph points in all four quadrants using ordered pairs of
rational numbers.
Students demonstrate prior knowledge of x & y axis and ordered
pairs (x,y) on a plane.
Demonstrate ability to follow directions while plotting points to
create a design.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the four quadrants on a
grid.

Projection device & screen

Have you seen Red? worksheet- 28 copies
Colored pencils
Map for hook

Anticipatory
Set Hook

Teacher will display a map using projection device and will explain that
this was the route taken from home to Target. The route will use a lot of
extra streets and turns when a simpler route was available. The teacher
will emphasize the importance of plotting points on a map for an
efficient route.

Input

The teacher will review (x,y) coordinates and explain following groups of
coordinates to create a line or shape.

Model

The teacher will demonstrate making a line with coordinate points by

using a set of coordinates from the Have you seen Red? worksheet.

Check for
Understandi
ng

Ask students identify each quadrant on a plane, the x- and y- axis, and
list the ordered pair for a set of random set of points on a plane.

Guided
Practice

The students will complete the Have you seen Red? worksheet and
color the picture created after all points have been plotted.

The teacher will move around the classroom to answer questions and
check on students accuracy of plotting points.
Accommodat
Reduce number of pairs the student has to plot. (this may change
ion &
the picture a bit)
Modifications
Pre-shade spots on graph that need to be shaded.
Provide extra time to be completed.
Provide graph paper with a larger pattern
Move student next to a model & use the buddy system.

Independent
Practice

Students will practice graphing groups of coordinate points and creating

lines and shapes based on the directions from the Have you seen Red?
worksheet.
Students will be required to demonstrate prior knowledge of an ordered
pair and of the four quadrants on a plane.

Closure

Extension

The teacher will continue to move around the classroom and check for
understanding
The teacher will show students the completed picture the set of points
on their worksheet created.
The teacher will discuss the importance of accurately identifying the
quadrants and correct point of an ordered pair to represent accurate
data on a grid.
The teacher will make a picture on a grid and will ask students to identify
the ordered pair groupings for that picture.
