In the efforts of further ensuring public safety for years to come, a new bridge that runs over Double

Creek in the Barnegat Township in Ocean City, New Jersey is set to replace the existing stricture, which
carries vehicular traffic on East Bay Avenue over the body of water, this fall. The new galvanized steel
bridge, which is constructed in part by durable pipe piling, will be much safer than the old wooden
bridge currently in place.
Once the states Department of Transportation approves the final bid, Ocean County officials are
expected to give the $3.77 million contract to Marbro Inc. of West End. The company will be tasked with
the project of replacing the 60-year-old wooden bridge that is showing signs of its old age since its
projected life span was only 50 years with a three-span steel plate girder bridge 135-feet in length.
The new bridge will be larger than the old providing more room on the shoulders of the lanes for
pedestrians who travel the bridge. The project is also in line with the countys plans to replace older
bridges around the county with more modern, and much safer, bridges that will last much longer than
their predecessors.

The 135-foot bridge will be constructed with a cast-in-place concrete deck for additional reinforcement.
Pipe piling filled with concrete and reinforced pile caps will make up the foundation of the new
structure. Steel sheet bulk heading and composite fenders will also be implemented during construction
to further support the pipe piling and pile caps.
Since construction on the new bridge is set for fall of 2015 and is expected to last at least 15 months,
city officials have had to come up with a way to complete the project while minimally effecting members
and structures of the surrounding community, as well as any marine traffic. To reduce headaches, the
project is set to be completed in a few different phases. Plans to alternate the traffic using a single lane
and the implantation of a temporary traffic signal are in the works for when construction does begin.
