Grade:

Unit: Heat and Temperature

Survey

Subject: Science
Lesson: Home Heating

Driving Question: How do grade seven Hebbville students

(families) heat their home? How and why are their heating
choices?
Curriculum Outcomes:
Describe, with examples, our heat needs and insulating technologies from the past

Expected Time: 2 classes (40 minutes each)

Resources: [like flipped videos, iPads, etc.]
Internet access for the survey (although a paper copy is also available). Access to
a graphing app is also required (results from the survey will be graphed). There is a
good free graphing app called iGraph it lite A handout with specific task details will
be made available through Edmodo or at the following; Student Handout. An
instructional video is available at the following: Home Heating
Lesson Procedure
Teacher does (I Do):
Teacher introduces task. Students will be
interviewing their parent(s) about the home heating
choices at their home. Students download the
specific handout through Edmodo or at the link
above. The handout clearly defines all expectations
and criteria.
Individual student work (You Do):
Students must complete the interview and either

upload their results or complete a paper copy. They

will all copy down the data collected by their peers.
They will then graph the data (based on a cumulative
grade total).

Group work (We Do): When the classes

recommences, as a group we will record the data
that was collected. When all data is collected, we
will discuss any trends that may have emerged.
Usually, there is a winner in terms of choices. All
students will graph their results.

Lesson Wrap Up:
Upon collection of the data and discussion about the home heating choices
students will be instructed to graph the final results (both for a specific class and
grade level).

Differentiation/Modification/Enrichment:
Allowances for both paper copies and digital submissions. The ensuing classroom
discussion about why people choose their home heating choices will hopefully be
an opportunity for higher levels of thought and reflection. Another possible
enrichment activity could be to pick a community from somewhere else in Canada
and study their home heating choices. Compare and contrast.

Assessment:
The survey is essentially complete or not complete. The resulting graph
evaluation / assessment can be set up depending on the individual teachers
preferences. Below is one possible rubric.
