Mangrove forests are unique ecosystems, strange environments
between land and sea. Mangrove trees grow in shallow, muddy waters that
are brackish, a mixture of salty and fresh water. Because the soil in which
they grow is waterlogged, mangroves have had to adapt.
Red mangroves have long, tangles arching roots that branch out from
the main trunk. The roots are visible above the water. These roots give the
red mangrove its nickname- walking tree. The purpose for such long roots is
to lift the trunk and leaves above the water line. The roots also filter out salt
and keep the tree anchored.

Black mangroves grow on higher ground. Their roots grow underground

and send up thin, vertical roots called pneumatophors. These air root provide
the tree with oxygen. Farther inland are the white mangroves that grow at
the highest elevation. They have no visible root system.
Once mangroves establish themselves, they help increase Sediment
deposits. The roots trap soil and debris, creating new land. The mangroves
also act as a buffer, protecting inner coastal areas. Their roots prevent soil
erosion. In addition, mangrove stands create their own habitat- a place
where fish, oysters, and crabs can hide, breed, and feed. Lizards and turtles
find sanctuary within the webbed roots, and birds use mangrove branches for
rookeries, or nesting areas.
Unfortunately, mangrove forests have been exploited for timber and
agriculture and to make room for human development. The deforestation has
severely impacted coastal environments. There are restoration programs
now in force that ban further destruction of mangrove forests and protect
sensitive ecosystems like the inner coastlands.
