Referencing
Regardless of the type of project you are doing you will probably need to do some research.
All information that you include that is not YOUR OWN original idea needs to be referenced, even if you put
it in your own words.
Use the referencing sheet below to help ensure that you properly give credit to others work (failure to
reference is called plagiarism and can result in 0s in school, expulsion from university or loss of you
career).
General Rules:
1. The first line is not indented, all others are (the opposite of a paragraph).
2. Authors names are listed first and should be written last name, first name.
3. All sources should be listed alphabetically by the first letter of the authors last name.
Referencing a book:
Author, A. A. (Year of publication). Title of work: Capital letter also for subtitle.
Location: Publisher.
Example:

Netiquette Rules
1. Dont use sarcasm, because its hard to tell without a human
voice.
2. Dont use ALL CAPS (its like shouting).
3. When writing an email, use proper sentences and grammar,
especially if its to a teacher, parent, or other adult. (avoid using
u and other text forms)
4. Dont send really large attachments to others.
5. If you are emailing a group of people, respect their privacy and
type their addresses into bcc (blind carbon copy).
6. Never forward someones email to someone else unless you
have the senders permission.
7. Fill in the subject line in your emails.
8. Dont tag others on social networking sites if theyve previously
asked you not to.

Studentsareinvitedtousetheirpersonaldevicesas

beencouragedbutbrowsingunrelatedwebsitesfor
personalamusementwouldnot.Studentsare
expectedtoremainontaskwhileusingtheir
personaldevices.

DDSBcomputingtechnologyismadeavailabletostudentstosupporttheirlearning,researchrequirements,andcareer
preparation.Computingtechnologyincludescomputersandassociatedperipherals,thecommunicationinfrastructure
andrelatedequipmentincludinglocalareanetworks(LANs)andwideareanetworks(WANs),facsimilemachines,
scanners,copiers,telephone,video,andothermultimediadevicesandformsofsoftware.
DDSBtechnologiesallowallschoolstoofferInternetaccesstotheirstudents.TheInternetisavehicleforaccessinga
globalnetworkofinformationresources.StudentsmayusetheInternettolocateandretrieveinformationand
communicatelearningwithothers.StudentsareencouragedtoreportCyberbullyingtoparents/guardians,teachers,
andprincipals.Cyberbullyinginvolvestheuseofinformationandcommunicationtechnologiestosupportdeliberate,
repeatedandhostilebehaviourbyanindividualorgroupthatisintendedtoharmothers.Cyberbullyingcanhappen
throughtheuseofemail,cellphonetext,multimediamessages,instantmessaging,defamatoryWeblogs(Blogs),
personalWebSites,onlinepersonalpollingsitesandsocialmediawebsitesandapplications.
Internetresourcesmaycontainmaterialthatmaybequestionable,objectionable,orillegal,andmayenablecontact
withpersonswhomayexhibitunacceptablebehaviour.Studentsrevisitingunacceptablesiteswillbesubjectto
disciplineaccordingtotheSchoolsCodeofBehaviour.
TheDDSButilizesinternetfilteringtechnologies.Thistechnologyblocksaccesstospecificunacceptablesitesknownto
containviolence,sexuallyexplicitacts,intolerant,racistandotherextremeviewpoints,cults,etc.Nosoftwareiscapable
ofblockingallunacceptableInternetsites.However,theInternetisaleadingtechnologyinthedeliveryofinformationin
today'ssocietyandtherefore,anintegralpartofourstudents'education.
TeachersandstudentsareinstructedonthesafeandacceptableuseoftheInternetandotherDDSBcomputing
technology.TeacherswillsupervisestudentuseoftheInternetastheysupervisestudentuseofallotherschool
resources.
AllstudentsareexpectedtoabidebytheDDSBAcceptableandSafeUseProcedureincludedwiththisletter.Misuse
and/orabuseofthefacilitiesandresourcesaresubjecttoconsequencesasdefinedandexplainedintheirschools
StudentCodeofBehaviour.UseoftheInternetisgovernedbytheRegulation5500,theStudentCodeofConduct,which
statesthat"astudentmaybesuspendedorexpelledfromhisorherschool,expelledfromattendinganyschoolin
Ontario,and/orprohibitedfromengaginginschoolrelatedactivitiesifthestudentcommitsaninfractionoftheCodeof
Conductwhileheorsheisatschool,engagedinaschoolrelatedactivity,orengagedinconductthathasarelationship
totheschool,schoolcommunity,thereputationoftheschoolorBoard."Inaddition,useisgovernedbyallrelevant
federal(e.g.CopyrightAct,FreedomofInformationAct,ProtectionofPrivacyAct,theCriminalCode),provincial(e.g.
EducationAct,ChildandFamilyServicesAct,SafeSchoolAct,HumanRightsCode),DDSB(e.g.PoliciesandProcedures,
CentralFile06/0728),andlocalschool(eg.SchoolCodeofBehaviour)lawsandregulations.UseofDDSBcomputing
technologyforunacceptable,illegal,political,orprivatecommercialpurposesisstrictlyprohibited.Theonusisonthe
