CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard 1
1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality
or owner and school factors:
Escuela Basica Higueras D-505 is a secondary public school that is located in
Braas 505, this belongs to the port city of Talcahuano nearby Concepcion, the
capital city of the VIII region of Chile. The community in which this school is
placed belongs to a low socioeconomic status.
This school counts with 202 enrolled students with an average of 20 students
per class, with only one class per level.
1.1.

How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:

The fact that the students belong to a public school and it is known that the
level of proficiency in English of the students is not as high as a private school, I
think that it will be difficult for me to develop my class entirely spoken in
English. Nonetheless, as the group class is ideal to develop a lesson (between
14 and 20 students) it will be easier to get to the students and for them it will
be easier to follow my lesson. The lack of materials the students have at the
school may be a difficult for me at the time of planning a lesson, I will have to
take into account what type of activities I can do with them with a limited
quantity of materials.
2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
This student is fifth grade 11 year old boy. He often demonstrates his interest in
the English subject, always willing to participate and asking for new vocabulary. Even
though this student tends to participate and show off in front of his classmates, he is
a very talkative and restless doing many of the tasks in a hurry in order to finish
before than his classmates.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
This student may be useful during my lesson, as he tends to participate and at
the same time he encourages his classmates to participate because he is consider a
leader between his classmates. Also, he is always trying to go deeper in the topic so
this may create an interesting interaction between students and also from the students
to myself.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

This student is a seventh grade boy. He is13 years old and he is not the best
student in English but, he is always trying to learn. Also he is the most talkative
students in the class but as he like the subject he tries to make an effort during
the class.
2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson
From the very first moment I came into the classroom, this student wanted to
be my friend. He is also a sort of leader in the classroom, so when he wants to pay
attention he ask for silence to his classmates and immediately the follow him. This may
have a good impact on my class because his classmates will follow what he does during
the lesson, even though this student sometimes does whatever he wants to do.
3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:
Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct
students, for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For
each example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence how
you plan and implement your instruction.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
Data in every classroom
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson
Having data in every class can help me to plan interactive activities using
images or videos that can call the students attention.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
Large rooms for few students
3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson
This can help for planning different types of activities than can be held all over
the class and also to change their sitting arrangement accorcing to the activity

4. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context

to provide quality teaching
I think that knowing about the students can help me to understand certain behaviors they may have
during the lesson. Also knowing their strengths and weaknesses as a group will lead me to plan in
order to improve their weaknesses from their strengths. Moreover, knowing them will help me to
create an ideal learning atmosphere during the class.
Knowing about the context of the school will help teachers to plan according to the facilities the
school has. Also, knowing the students context will help teacher to know where the students come
from in order to contextualize their learning.
