Teaching Lesson Plan

Teacher:

Tiffiny Smart

Title:

Commutative Property of Addition

Subject:

Math

Grade:

2nd Grade

Objectives:

Review properties and strategies for adding previously learned in past class.
Students will be able to add using the Commutative Property.
Students will know how to use the commutative property correctly.

Materials Needed:

Commutative property dice game worksheets

Dice (2 die per group)
Doc. Cam./white board & marker

Description:

First review strategies the students know, and then introduce the commutative property
by building on what they learned in a previous class (Associative property, rounding).

Teach the commutative property and do dice activity

Lesson:

(Minute 1-5) Begin with a couple problems to review what was learned in last class, as
well as to get students in the mode for math
(Minute 6-7) Use strategies used in the review section to introduce the commutative
property: if a + b = c then b + a = c
(Minute 8-10) After introducing the commutative property to the class, hand out the
Commutative Property Dice Activity worksheet.
(Minute 11-12) Do the first problem as a class, to show students how to play the game.
(Minute 13-18) Turn time over to students to complete the activity.
(Minute 19-20) As a class, go over a couple problems from the students worksheets.
Reinforcing what they did, and what they learned. Also allows to see if they understood
the directions.

Assessment:

Dice Game. I will be able to assess the students on the worksheet that goes with the
game. Did the students correctly play the game? Did they grasp the concept of the
Commutative Property?
