We Need To Talk About Vampires

Lately, within the realm of YA fiction, theres a constant preoccupation

with the supernatural, specifically vampires. But, the idea of vampirism isnt
the only constant within YA fiction. Throughout various books with the idea
central to vampires, there is a constant depiction of abusive relationships,
gender politics, racism, victim-blaming, issues of consent, violence, male
privilege, female passivity, and blatant objectification. From the strangely
and wildly popular Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer to the House of Night
series by P.C. Cast to the Jessicas Guide by Beth Fantaskey, there are the
constant ideas, especially concerning what consent is, that are circulating
throughout the millennial generation.

The disappointing thing, though, is that there are millions of teenage girls
reading these books, and truly believing that everything that occurs in these
books are okay, when they just arent.
