Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Step by Step Through the Lesson:
Students sit at carpet, lesson begins with a chime by the student helper. Explain to the
students that we will be doing the letter S. Go through the process of how to write
the letter S. Start with upper case, and finish with lower case. Circle the best one of
each, and provide a demonstration of what we do not want the letter S to look like.
Next, allow the students to do a letter S in the air, or on some ones back. Once
everyone had the chance to do the letter S, move on to naming S words. Remind
the students that we are looking for words that start with the letter S. Also remind
the students that everyone will have a chance to share, but they must have their hand
up. Clap out the syllables in each word. At the end of the lesson, give the students a
chance to do an A/B partner share, so they can tell their partner two S words that
they will write in their note books. The special helper will hand out the notebooks.
Grade one students will write 5 S words, and the grade 2 students will write 8.

Materials: Penmanship books, pencil, white board, white board markers.

can not hear the chime

Input/Information: Go through the process of

doing an S with the students.

Students watch my example, and

perform an S in the air.

Modelling: Ask each student to name an S

word.

Guided Practice: Students work through their

penmanship assignment in notebooks. I will
circle the class and help students with their
hand up.
Independent Practice: If students finish early
they can make a longer list of S words. I
wonder how many they can do?

Checking For Understanding: How can I

make sure ALL of my students understand the
lesson and the standards expected of them in
the activity?
Closure: Transition to next activity by returning
to the carpet for LA lesson.

Students put up their hands, and share

their S words. We then clap out the
syllables together.

Students work quietly at their desk. If

they need help or they are done, put their
hand up!!
