Lesson 4

Parenthesis in Math
Lesson Overview: This lesson will be a review to the rules that apply to parenthesis in
mathematical equations. Students will learn that when they see a multi-function equation that if
parenthesis or brackets are present, they must be solved first. The students will be reminded of
order of operations and that to solve multi-function equations they must follow a strict set of
order rules.

Materials Needed:

iPad
Promethean White Board
Doceri
Worksheet #5 Bracket & Parenthesis

Learning Objective:
Students will know the rules and procedures a multi-function equations that include parenthesis
or brackets. When given a problem containing parenthesis or brackets, students will understand
how that relates to an order of operations problem and its sequence and solve the problem with
an 80% accuracy. Students will take a lesson assessment on Schoology and must pass with an
80% or higher mark.

Time: One class lesson (60 Minutes)

Classroom set-up: Students will be in their standard team of 5s. Each group facing the front of
the room.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

1) The teacher will put a multi-function equation on the Smart board and solve it not using
the rules of order of operation. (7 + 22 * 3)
2) The teacher will then solve the problem adhering to the order of operations rules and
have the students compare the answers.
3) Students will then discuss with a shoulder partner why there is two different answers and
be able to explain it.

4) The teacher will then call on different students to explain in their own words why the
same equation can have to different answers.
Step 2: Content Presentation
1) The teacher will put a multi-function equation that includes a parenthesis on the Smart
board. (13 + 7) + (12 + 6 * 3)
2) The students using their iPad will be asked to solve the equation.
3) The teacher will go over the rules for parenthesis and solve the problem as the students
check their work. Once solved the teacher will answer any questions or
misunderstandings.
4) The teacher will do another 3 to 10 equations based off of student responses and their
understanding. (Teacher created problems.) Once the teacher feels the students have a
solid understanding they can move onto independent work.
Step 3: Learner Participation
1) Students will use their iPads to complete the parenthesis worksheet. The worksheet will
be on Schoology (LMS) which will provide instant feedback and a score once completed.
2) At all times the teacher will be at the back table to offer help and extra instruction to any
student who does not understand or is stuck.
Step 4: Assessment
1) With the students using Schoology they will be able to get a score instantly from the
worksheets they completed.
2) Using the feedback and score the students must go back and resolve any problem they
missed to achieve the 80% goal.
3) The students will check off their completed worksheets with an 80% score to the
teacher.
4) If 80% or higher is achieved and there is still time left, students can log onto Khan
Academy and work on 5th grade order of operation problems.

Step 5: Follow Through Activities

Students will be required to pass off problems as exit tickets throughout the day. Each time the
students go to a special like computers, library, lunch, or recess the students will be required to
answer a problem to leave. This allows the teacher to assess each student on an individual basis
and requires the student to possess the skills to solve random equations.
